Victor's Story

Life June, 27, 2005 This appears to be more akin to a running journal than an entire life bio, but it's more fun this way: those titles and headings are probably more suggestions than hard and fast rules at any rate... I am still in Maimi, specifically Doral, although my apartment is in Miami Beach, specifically South Beach. Why specifically? Well, in most cities in Canada, you refer to the city and that's that. In urban America, entire cities are suburbs. Right around me there are probably ten cities with nary a mile of anything resembling open space between them. Enough about that though... In Miami Beach, I live in an apartment which, by local standards is cheap. It is, however, stupidly expensive by normal people's standards. Imagine a monthly mortgage and car payment. Double it. There's the one month's rent. The only reason I stick with it is because I will probably never live here again, so I might as well enjoy it as much as I can, and having a very spacious and comfortable place to call home for awhile does this for me. There's that and the fact that the lease on the apartment isn't up until next February. There are many places around where I live where I find things to do and consequently, help me eke out a blissful existance. There's Lincoln Road, South Beach, and the bay. Lincoln Road is basically a fancy schmancy walkway with exotic (re: expensive) restaurants and boutiques. Now, this has never really appealed to me, but you will not find many other places to people watch, which, when firmly grasping a gelatto or mocha frappacino, is actually quite amusing. South Beach is a fantastic beach with great sand; not as nice as Aruba, but then again, where is? If not for the fact that the sun bakes my skin a fairly lively shade of crimson i...Expand for more
n short order, I would spend more time there. My apartment faces the city of Miami Beach, but the backside has a bay view and the three pools and two jacuzzis available for public use. (Well, public meaning a tenant of the apartment complex I live in; there are 1500+ units in it.) Let's just say... You need to see it to believe some of the things here. Enough about the here and now. I'll move on to the later... You know, growing up in Winnipeg I did not notice how grimy a city it was. After seeing more cities than I can recall throughout North America, Europe and south east Asia, I now realize this. It is, and always be, my first home, so I can't help but feel a strong attachment to it. I am going to try and get back there this fall and see how it has come along since I last saw it in the mid 90's. Calgary has changed a lot since then, and I am hoping Winnipeg has changed much for the better as well. Perhaps I'll even find the time to visit my old schools and hangouts. Nostalgia is a bitch, isn't she? That's about all for now. I'll probably update this when I get done the trip back to Winnipeg or get exceedingly bored. I had planned to update this after the trip to Italy, but it appears I have been spared that trip! May, 2006 I've moved back to Calgary since my time in Miami was up. Having quit Carnival Cruise Lines to come back here to do some decent fly fishing. There was already deep sea fishing, but that's nothing like fishing in a quiet stream in the arms of the Canadian prairies. Oh, I now work for Sunshine Village, a ski resort of some note. I would ski more, but, uhm, after having fractured three ribs on bunny hills of Finland, I think these double black diamonds would shatter me. Still, I think it will continue to be a good life...
