Virgil's Story

Saw military service from January 1951 through December 1953. The majority of this time was spent at Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nevada as a weapons mechanic in the 3525th Aircraft Gunnery Squadron. As Sergeant in charge of the "harmonization crew" (aiming guns to hit specific parts of a 3 foot bullseye at 1,000 feet) I was sent to Edwards Flight Test Center to assist in operational testing of a new fighter-bomber. While at Edwards I missed the last shipment to Korea before the end of the war. In 1954 went back to Southern California Edison where I had worked a month before enlistment in the air force. Had started as a mail delivery clerk in the Transportation Department Accounting Office. Upon return, with the accumulated seniority, they gave me a better job. Went back to college, at night, on the G.I. Bill. In twenty-two years progressed through various positions to Accounting Office Supervisor. In 1972 transferred to what is now Information Technology as a Procedures (Technical) Writer, in Corporate Procedures, maintaining instruction manuals for various departments of the company. The combination of college courses and work experience led to assignment to systems development teams for Corporate Accounting and Reporting Systems, Financial Accounting Systems and the Income Tax Information System. Spent my last year in Software Engineering writing procedures for the online manual for programmers. On December 1, 1990, I retired after 40 years with So...Expand for more
uthern California Edison. Some of my valued achievements or recognitions were: 1, The return of a Major to see and personally thank me for harmonizing his guns after he won an air force gunnery meet in his F-51 Mustang. 2. Participated in the movie "Sabre Jet", starring Robert Stack and Colleen Gray, by doing the close-ups of a North American F-86 Sabre Jet firing tracers from all six 50 caliber machine guns. 3. Working for Major James H. Doolittle, Jr., son of the famous General "Jimmy" Doolittle. 4, After retirement, studying and passing exams for my F.C.C. Amateur Radio License. Call sign: KC7WHG. In 2012 achieved the top license available, Amateur Extra, which allows operation at all the frequencies on all the bands available to amateurs. On April 4, 2014 changed my call sign to the vanity call sign W7VEC. Became a Volunteer Examiner (VE) on a team that tests wannabe "hams" or those wanting to upgrade to a higher class license. Recent years have been spent traveling. Hawaii, Alaska, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tanzania, Greece, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Hungary and the Czech Republic. My home is on nine-and-a-half acres on a hillside overlooking the beautiful Southern Oregon coast with a twenty-six mile view to distant Crescent City, California. Brookings is one of the small coastal towns along the Oregon coast where the beach state parks begin. Our population is a little over 6500.
