Virginia's Story
Sometimes I think technology rules my life. I exist with a smart phone strapped to my hip, although I find I am often too busy to respond when it buzzes for my attention. The first thing I do, when I've even a moment to spare, is check out twitter or Facebook to see what's happening in the world of my family, friends and various side interests. I know I certainly couldn't manage without the computers, phones, fax machines and other assorted techno gadgets that make it possible for me to stay on top of the multi-dimensional workload that is my professional life. Unfortunately it is sometimes hard to leave that behind for the space I need to maintain my personal relationships. I don't balance as well as I would like... just ask my husband of nearly 22 years! hrough the neighborhood - they help keep me sane. Camping and biking or time spent in search of the perfect photograph during long weekend trips filled to the brim, where all technology is left behind, provide little islands of calm in my sea of tech.
I've given up regular TV for Netflix and books are now all on my Kindle. Who can be bothered with finding a stamp when snail mail takes so long and costs money? I can email my mom, text my sister, IM my husband, post a notice of the significant events in my life to all my greater acquaintances on Facebook, and twit the little victories all from the privacy of my own restroom. Tech is so much more convenient, don't you know? No wonder I've let it come to rule my life... How did that happen? WHEN did that happen? At what point did my story, my life, come to depend so much on technology?
