Vivien's Story

After graduating from West, I went to a small university in the midwest, and then transfered to the U of WA. Graduated with a degree in social welfare, beleiving I would help save the world (in college I was active in Zero Population Growth (and later had four kids), the Open Door Clinic, where all kinds of people dropped in, freeing Soviet Jewery, open housing, and a few other causes). A couple weeks after graduation I was traveling/hitching through Europe with a couple friends, and arrived in Israel that August. Lived in several places, including a couple kibbutzim, Jerusalem, and was a community worker in a poor, undeveloped town in the south. After three years. I returned to the states for a visit, and ended up staying three years in Seattle. Met an Israeli student, Arie, got married, and when he finished at the UW, we returned to Israel, with a four month old son. We have been since living on a moshav (similar to a kibbutz) for the last 39 years. Most kibbutzim, and moshavim, have undergone various degrees of privatization over the last few years. Altho, we still have some communal connections, we are no longer what we once were, and I, personally, had a difficult time time giving up the communal lifestyle, but have moved on and adjusted. And am grateful to be living out of the city in the Judean Hills and near enough to Jerusalem, when I need to be there. For many years, members of our community were only allowed to work w/in the community so most of my work experience was in childcare (nursery school) and working in a hotel we, the community, owned, but were forced to sell because of debts brought on by two intifadas (buses being blown up etc - terrible times!!!) and no tourism. About 20 years ago, I began to study. and still do, various modalities in complementary medicine, which is still my passion. I have ...Expand for more
been working w/ Holocaust survivors from around that time, and also give treatments in the hotel, which is walking distance from my house. I also have a clinic in my house where I have private clients. We have 4 kids, Both sons, Doron and Yoel, live in Jerusalem and are extremely religious. They and their wives were in the army etc, and became religious afterwards .. Even for me, as I'm observant, but moderate,, it's one of my challenges - accepting their way of life. Merav and family are in Florida, and she wants to come back, but her husband's not ready and Dafna's husband is doing his postdoc in NC, and they should be back in a yr or 2. They have purchased a lot on the moshav, so the plan is to live here. At the moment we have 9 grandchildren. At this stage, I seem to be semiretired. Sometimes busy w/ treatments, and sometimes not. Aside from that am, active in a few other things. Volunteer in oncology in a hospital in Jerusalem w/ a nonprofit,, giving treatments, and in the past volunteered w/ terror survivors belong to a couple study groups,, and am part of an amazing woman's group, and a healing group, w/ some of the same women. Also study a lot,, mosty health, and spritual (Kabala) related. Do quite a bit of long distance healing.. Am a member of Greenpeace.. Have been a vegetarian since I was 23, and try to educate people about various health issues/challenges and adopting a more natural approach to selfcare as well as caring for the enrironment. Major challenges for me - getting thru the long, hot summers, and being disorganized. Other than that, have learned to "let go," but that is inconsistent, especially, when my kids are involved, but working on it... And, of course, living over here can be intense at times. So, there you have it. Anyone, who makes it over here, is invited to visit. Shalom!
