W Berry's Story
Oklahoma born and bred. Attended Heronville Elementary in OKC and Lincoln Elementary in Norman (also first grade at OKC Coolidge); Central Jr. High in Norman, then Capitol Hill Junior in OKC; all three years at good ol' CHHS! Played some basketball there and ran cross-country; drank cherry Cokes at the Spot.
Became a Christian as a college freshman at OU. Married Nancy Cotten from Norman High; had two kids, Marcie and Aaron. Marcie passed away at sixteen; Aaron was born in 1973, is married, has two kids, lives here in the Phoenix area (but, like, more than an hour away!), and leads a tremendously creative church called The Bridge (find it online), which operates an inner city ministry called the Rio Vista Center (find it online)--feeding, training, clothing--offering community to those who have no community.
I pastored churches in OK & KS from 1970-1988; been in AZ since. I have pastored the First Southern Baptist Church of Scottsdale since 1998 (find it online); we emphasize rolled-up-sleeves missional living "beyond the walls" of the church, extending into other countries.
Attended OU from 1967-1969; OBU from 1972-1974. Ended up getting my bachelor's, ...Expand for more
master's, and doctorate in theological education over the years (just finished the ThD in 2007). I serve on the Board of Directors for St. Andrew's Theological College & Seminary in NC and as an adjunct professor teaching Pastoral Ministries for Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (AZ campus).
Nancy and I enjoy our son Aaron, daughter-in-law Tammy, and grandkids Bryn and Jake, as well as grandson Dustyn, Marice's son; our church family; our OK relatives (we come back at least a couple of times a year); and just the thrill of living. Nancy is into scrapbookking, volunteering at the Rio Vista Center and two Christian schools, and various church mission projects (she also plays the piano and keyboard).
Life is good, though not always easy. God is good, and always faithful. Soooo, I guess I am "rich!"
I always wanted to be a basketball coach when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a realistic idea. As it turns out, they were right to a degree--did some city and church league coaching before I was married (and ten years of sports organizing and officiating during my ministry!). And . . . I love my ministry far more than I could ever love sports.
