Wallace's Story

Life I have had a very diverse life since leaving Central. While at the U of M, I met and married my wife (now married for over 43 years). We had 2 girls before finishing school and a son several years later. The kids have provided us with 5 grand-kids to date with another arriving in November (06). My wife was a school teacher for much of her career, until she tired of getting recertified in a new state when I was transferred. We now live on Elk Lake near Traverse City. Through school, I worked in a motorcycle shop, two high tech companies as an engineer, and raced motorcycles professionally for extra money (I pretty good -- even beating Bart Markel, another CHS grad who was national motorcycle champion for several years, the one time I raced him. After buying the place on the lake from my Mother and my aunt, we moved up here when we graduated. We refurbished a small summer resort and lived on it for a year. Then Honda offered me a position as field business consultant which resulted in two times living in southern California, and a progression to National Parts Manager. We tired of SoCal so I resigned and went to work as Continuing Education Director at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City (home again). I did pretty well, made the college a lot of money, and was elected president of the College Council -- and then the experiment in making money on corporate training and professional seminars was cancelled (they figured I could land on my feet when they hired me over 120 other, much more qualified candidates) and after allowing me to teach for a while, let me go. I had an interesting, but poorly paid 4 years in Traverse City (where the view of the bay is worth half the pay) as a vocational education teacher (computer programming), Quality Control Manager of a minority parts manufacturer supplying GM and Ford, maintenance supervisor for a United Technologies plant, an office supply owner, and a contract computer programmer. ck into the car business by working in a Buick/GMC dealer until Honda asked me to come back and help start up Acura Division. This resulted in another time living in SoCal as I was Assistant field service manager, and customer relations manager. I was promoted to Zone manager in Chicago where we lived for about 6 years. When the time came to accept a transfer back to California, I resigned again to join an automotive industry consulting firm based in Napa Valley. For 5 years I had the ideal situation, living in Northern Michigan on the lake and commuting monthly to the Napa wine country for to work in the office. We lived there for a while to work on a large international project -- but then the Chrysler/Mercedes "merger" and a reorganization of GM caused the business to fail as 10 million in annual income contracts were put on hold while the companies figured out what their next steps were -- my view is that both suffered from the next mis-steps. We returned to Elk Lake and I have been an independent consultant since 1999, with a break of a bit over a year when the UN hired me to develop a business continuity/disaster recovery plan for the organization -- I was supposed to start work on 9/12/01 and arrived as soon as I could get to Manhattan. That was a surreal time -- we lived less than 100 yards from the UN, within the security perimeter so we had to walk about a mile to get our car for trips. We had a fine time exploring the city and state of NY, while I learned just how disfunctional the UN really is. My kids have done well -- one is an environmental scientist at EPA, another saved wild animal species until she married and became a Mom, and my son gained a film degree from Columbia but is currently a stay at home Dad while his wife pursues a career in the Detroit area. My wife has beaten three kinds of cancer and a couple of serious non-malignent tumors -- but she took great care of me, so I have had little in the way of health problems.
