Wallace (Wally)'s Story
Unlike Joanne who was inspired by a friend to write a story, I was threatened by a little lady in baggy pajamas with calloused hands and feet, an ear piercing screech and a black belt. Who might that be you ask, I ain't tellin'. Suffice it to say.....fear made me do it.
An only child born in Daytona Beach, FL the family moved to NY when I was five due to a job transfer. Hence, my book learnin' happened at PS 151, JHS 10 and Bryant. We lived across the street from Bryant on 48th between Broadway and Northern Blvd. After high school, I worked for Union Carbide on Park Ave. in the city and the New York Worlds Fair in Flushing. Like thousands of young men who turned 21 in 1965, I was drafted into the Army spending two years to the day. Upon discharge, moving back to Florida in 1967, I worked at various jobs and finished college using the GI bill. Went right to work after graduation as a veteran's counselor and speech teacher at a community college. etirement on 10/1/2010. I consider myself quite fortunate, working since I was 13 years old - continous for 53 years including college and the military - and stopping on the day I had planned without someone telling me I had to. I do stay busy in football season working for the National Football League as a member of their Scouting Staff (9th year), and in the replay booth for the Sun Belt Conference (2nd year).
What makes me smile and realize the fullness of my life is the love and closeness of family and good friends. Lovely wife Nancy, great sons Eric and Craig, beautiful daughter Donna and seven wonderful grandchildren. Add a feisty 91 year old mother who still gets up and goes whenever she wants and I am constantly inspired every day.
I'm smiling more, now that I am gradually getting re-acquainted with fellow Owls who left the common nest in '62. I look forward to October 2012 when, hopefully, many of us will gather to enjoy the pleasure of each other's company. 'Til then, I leave you with this. When you walk through that portal in to the next day of your future, find only the good things that make you smile and bring you the health and happiness you deserve.
