Walter's Story
Life
I had to work immediately after High School because my father had been unemployed for almost 3 years. He found a job w/Boeing two years after I finished High School, so then I attended College of Dupage in Ill. During High School I was on the B.R.Ryall YMCA swim team and went to YMCA nationals twice (in '75 and '76), our team won the Nat'ls in '76, but I don't remember much of it because it was soon after my brother Paul was killed in a Navy A6 Intruder training exercise (March '76). At College of Dupage I went to Junior College nationals twice and place 10th in the 200 yd. Butterfly both years ('79 & '80). I then worked a couple more years, then attended University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) on a swimming scholarship. I worked summers as a lifeguard for the ...Expand for more
Chicago Park District at 57th street beach (I was the no. 1 lifeguard candidate in '83). I joined the Navy in '85 and became an Electronics Technician (no. 1 graduate in my Electronics Technician Advanced Electronics Field "A" school class). I was stationed in Iceland for 2 yrs, then was on the USS Normandy from '89-'91 and served in Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm. After the Navy I went to work for Illinois Bell (Ameritech), worked for Lucent but got laid off in 2002 and now I work for US Cellular. I got married in '99 and now have 2 kids. My father died in '98, but my mother is still with us, she retired last year and enjoys spoiling her newest grandchild. My brother and sister live on the east coast, my brother has 6 boys and my sister has a boy and a girl.
