Walter's Story
In January 1968, I left for Seattle to work for the Boeing Company as a draftsman and with every intention of returning to Tucson in a year. Marriage, children (two daughters), work, and divorce all contributed to me not returning. I left Boeing and over the years worked for local consulting engineering firms where I was able to learn the fundamentals of electrical design as it pertained to the construction industry. This led to becoming a project designer and eventually project manager, and involved me in many diverse projects including work on the Microsoft campus.
After living 29 years in Seattle, I concluded that I had grown too small for the city and started visiting Boise, Idaho as a prospect for relocation. I worked for a couple of local architectural/engineering companies there and was involved in providing electrical designs primarily for Albertsons and Safeway grocery stores all over the western states. The economic downturn rendered my position expendable and I became a casualty of downsizing.
So after 13 years in Boise I finally made it back to Arizona and am currently serving as the founder, CEO, and sole employee of Retirement in Action, a self-funded, definitely non-profit organization dedicated to the pursuit of living simply so that I may simply live. We (Gus the Wonder Dog and I) are in the planning stages of relocating all operations to a more agreeable climate, perhaps Colorado. But as we all know, plans are what you make until life gets in the way.
