Walter's Story

Born in Bryn Mawr, PA on the mainline of the Pennsylvania Railroad, 22-months before the Japanese attach on Pearl Harbor. Parents not willing to take another chance grew up an only-child. Spent every childhood summer in Poultney, VT on beautiful Lake Saint Catherine. Age six, moved to St. Clair Shores, Michigan and developed a passion for boating on Lake St. Clair, exploring Peche Island, marine history of the Great Lakes, horseback riding on Belle Isle, Goebel 22 beer at the Harbor Bar, cheeseburgers at Sindbad¿s boat-in restaurant and a love for newspapers. Moved back to Philadelphia, Upper Darby, in 1950 and back to Detroit, St Clair Shores, in 1956. Lived for the annual unlimited class, Allison Aircraft engine powered, ¿Gold Cup¿ hydroplane races, pit-pass in hand and dinner reservations at the Roostertail restaurant. My first car was a dark maroon 1950 Ford convertible. Summer nights, top-down and WXYZ AM and Lee Allen playing the tunes heading for the Pointe Bar-B-Q on Warren Ave. Became a copyboy on the old Detroit Times and ran it out of business. With the Army breathing down my neck and a draft notice about to be mailed, joined the Air Force. Stationed, for four years in the high desert of Washington State in the town of Moses Lake, named for Indian Chief Moses who was famous for n...Expand for more
ever fighting the white-man for the land. He said, hay, you want the God ¿forsaken place, fine, we¿re outa here. Discharged after four years as a SAC trained killer, returned to Detroit. Met and married Linda Kellstrom, who was a legal secretary to my best friend, later best man, Aldo Giglio. Honeymooned in Vermont and returned home July 23, 1967 to be greeted by buildings on fire on both side of the Lodge Freeway and the Detroit riots in full force. The next day, started a new job selling commercial lines of insurance for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. Then transfers to Grand Rapids, back to Detroit, to Kalamazoo, back to Detroit, to Kansas City and then to St. Louis when I ended my 34-year Liberty career and retired in 2001. People had begun to wonder what in the world I¿d done to keep getting transferred to Detroit? We¿ve lived in Saint Louis since 1985 and have two sons, both living near us here in the area and two grandchildren. We have a summer place in Osage Beach, Missouri, on the Lake of the Ozarks. The lake is 90-miles long and wonderful for fishing and boating. The grandkids love the lake and swimming in the pool. Life has been very good and I¿ve been blessed with many friendships far and wide. As I approach my 70th birthday, I can¿t wait to see what tomorrow will bring?
