Wanda's Story
Life
After graduating from Riverside High School in 1964, I attended Tennessee State University in Nashville. My major was Business Education and while in Nashville I met and married Augustus Williams from Miami, FL.
Gus and I had two daughters--Natalie Michelle born in March, 1966 and Kimala Danielle, born in March, 1968.
After we were marriend, Gus and I took a break from TSU and stayed in Miami with my in-laws. Natalie was born in March, 1966 and after her birth, we got jobs and saved our money. With the help of our parents, we returned to Nashville to continue our education in the Fall of 1966.
We found a little furnished apartment on 32nd Avenue--just a few blocks from the campus. That became our home. Gus pledged Omega Psi Phi and was a member of the Quedettes. We soon found out that I was pregnant again and Kimala Danielle was born in March, 1968.
That same year, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4. My husband and first love, Augustus Williams, was killed in a car accident on April 27 on Jefferson Street in Nashville.
Natalie is married now and has two sons--Joshua, 14 years old, and Miles, 2 years old. Kimala is also married and has three children--Ashlee, 19 and in college; Tyler, who is 12 going on 41; and, Marissa, the sweetest little 8 year old in the world.
I finally graduated from TSU in August, 1969 and became a teacher in Chattanooga with the Comprehensive Education Training Program for adults. I taught typing, shorthand, business math and...Expand for more
English. Our goal was to train and assist adults in getting jobs. This was a very successful program and taught adults in this program for ten years.
While working with the CETA Program, I met and married Paul L. Morant, Sr. We have two sons--Paul, Jr. and David Anthony. Paul, Jr. has no children and is a hard worker. David is in the Army and is married with five children.
In 1981, I became employed with IBM--International Business Machines Corporation. I was with IBM for 23 years and 4 months. As of April, 2004 I retired from IBM and being retired and enjoying my leisure time has been more than words can say. I bowl in two leagues and I also volunteer with the Georgia Special Olympics with which I am a chaperone and also coach bowling and table tennis. In addition to bowling, I enjoy rolling skating, dancing, walking, reading and spending time with my 13 grandchildren.
The Tennessee State National Alumni Association-- Atlanta Chapter is one of my passions. I am proud to be the Corresponding Secretary of our chapter and I have just been appointed the Southeast Regional Secretary.
Seeing my classmates from high school and from Tennessee State University means a lot to me. Enjoying my family members is also very important to me especially since my mother died in 1999 and my father in 2003. My sisters, my only brother and myself try to keep our family members in touch with each other at least every other year with a Doris and Jerry Brown Family Reunion. Family is the very, very important.
