Warren's Story

Hi all! Check out my Bulletin Board (tab above) for a general message to everyone about making contact. Here's a timeline of my slightly eccentric life story: Sep 67: Entered St. John's College in Annapolis. Great school for learning about western history and practicing dialectics. Gravitated quickly to the counterculture of the day. Dec 67: After many discussions and much soul searching, I decided I could not in good conscience continue to have a student draft deferment while poor kids were being forced into the senseless bloodbath that was Vietnam. Sent a letter to President Johnson..in the letter was my draft card, torn in half- and very nearly went to jail for it. Long story short, it turned out I had a medical deferment anyway. A couple of months later, Johnson announced he would not run again in 68. We now know he was devastated by the extent to which he knew that his Vietnam folly would overshadow his great accomplishments in the fields of civil rights, anti-poverty programs and the creation of Medicare. ( Maybe I did my little part after all... but then we got Nixon. Sheesh! ) Jun 69: Left St. John's after completing 2 years; traveled the country with friends and ended up on a communal farm in the mountains of British Columbia. A fantastic experience. 71 to 77: Back in Baltimore, worked in carpentry, construction, landscaping and other odd jobs; lived in a big rented mansion with many good friends who remain friends to this day. Sep 77: Entered nursing school and embarked on a 20-yr career as a Registered Nurse, working mostly in ERs and trauma centers in MD, VA, CA and lately here on the Oregon coast. A fine and rewarding career that never made me rich but satisfied my altruistic impulses. Oct 94: Married a lovely lady (a co-worker), my first and only marriage. Dec 98: Suffered a disabling back injury while working in ER. Have been fully work-disabled since. Although I can get around, I am unable to stand, sit, or walk for very long, due to serious unrelenting pain. This made a sudden, radical change in my lifestyle: prior to my injury I was in great shape and was extremely active, spending my free time travellng, hiking, canoeing, camping etc. My wife and I got an RV and traveled all round the West and Southwest in our free time. I had two surgeries after my injury, but both made me worse in ways. Dec 05: Physical and financial constraints imposed by my injury resul...Expand for more
ted in an amicable divorce. We remain friends. I currently live in a trailer on the coast, surviving on SS Disability. I'm in a parklike area with mature trees and a reed marsh adjacent, so there are plenty of birds and other critters... and I live on the edge of the beautiful coastal town, Newport, with ocean beaches, a scenic bay and harbor, lighthouses and rugged coastline just a stone's throw away. I like kids but never had or wanted any of my own. Currently I have a cute and sweet little lovebird who is cheerful company. In the past I've had other parrots, before that an assortment of cats. Although my activities are seriously restricted, I remain a fundamentally happy person, grateful that I still have all my faculties and can take care of myself. I still love to play guitar and sing I practice by lying on my side on the edge of the bed and propping the guitar on my table). My guitar skills have greatly improved, but my singing has suffered a bit from aging. I have gotten into writing songs, some of which I may soon post on my Mac Cloud site. I will fwd instructions to anyone interested. For anyone interested in guitars, the one in my photo is my favorite out of a collection of too many... a Larivee Parlor, hand-crafted in California, with a bearclaw spruce top and rare, highly desirable Brazilian rosewood back and sides. It has a wonderfully sweet, full plaintive voice and is compact and light in weight. I play folk, bluegrass, Americana, Celtic, country, oldies and some rock, and lately have ventured a bit into basic jazz and classical styles. My other interests include photography, birding and astronomy. Soon I will be posting some of my pics to my Cloud as well. I follow politics and world affairs closely, and am thrilled by the results of the last election. This summer or fall I may trade my trailer for a motor home and move to the Tucson area. Tucson has a great music scene, and one of the world's finest collections of telescopes at Kitt Peak. I have picked out an RV park about 30 minutes east of the city... the park owner has an astro observatory on-site, and residents can use his scopes whenever skies are clear- about 300 nights a year, unlike here in Oregon where monsoon season lasts from November to June. Tucson also is one of the finest birding and nature photography areas in the country. I will update my profile if I move. All my best to everyone, Warren Litsinger
