Warren's Story
Life
Lots of water under the bridge since I graduated from N.H.S. in '54, then again in '93 after 25 years of teaching at the ole alma mater.
I've been privileged to have lived more in one life than many folks do in a dozen, took forever to get thru school and get my teaching credential, taught for 54 years now, counting my YMCA work, Isbell Jr. Hi in Santa Paula 6yrs., Midway School in Fellows k-8 1yr. NHS for 25, VC part time 22 and still going, beach lifeguard/lifeguard supervisor/ junior lifeguard program founder and director, 25 yrs. aquatic director, asst. camp director and finally volunteer staff YMCA Camp Surf, Coronado, 10yrs., managed and ran "Alberts Anchorage Tahitian village" at Albert's Anchorage, Santa Cruz Island, livingn there all summer and all weekeds and vacations for a school year, aquatic specialist Dahran Saudi Arabia two summers, with an around the globe diving/surfing trip included each time. At NHS taught everything in aquatics from non-swimmers, handicapped/adaptive, swim instructor, scuba, scuba instructor, instructor training, ocean lifeguarding, surfing, kayaking, canoeing, coached boys/girls swim teams, water polo when the girls, (boy could they be mean and tough), played on the boys team, developed the do-si-do method of administering in-the-water resuscitation, contributed to the ymca scuba lifesaving accident management manual and the scuba rescue chapter of the noaa dive manual. Summer of '09 pulled a Kenny Rogers and folded and walked away after 50 years of teaching surfing and running surf camps, for everything there is a season and a reason, turn turn turn. Now volunteering in the Fitness Center at the Cal Vets Home in Saticoy and get called "youngster" by all the vets as many of them in are their 90,s. They are the best hstory books and psychology teachers I ever met and I love them dearly,
My Pets...
had, loved and lost a number of german shephards and rottweilers over the years, an african grey parrot with an unbelievable and sometimes unprintable vocabulary. My twenty one year old felne just passed, in his sleep, so I
saw a story in the Ventura Star about the "Pet of the Week." She is a fourteen pound of Calico with Tuxedo markings, seven years old and crawls under the covers, nestled up to my side and keeps me warm all night.
She is a welcome addition to this empty home...
My Kids
all grown obviously, all nordhoff grads, oldest and youngest girls, middle two boys. Eldest daughter just got degree and teaching credential in special ed. (following dad), eldest son in grad school for 99th. year, middle son a retired (disability) local harbor patrol deputy, now working in and running ocean rescue schools internationally, youngest a local insurance agent. six grandkids, all beautiful, intelligent and handsome, one passed on from sids.
My life now...
Teach part time at vc (ocean aquatic specialist), all levels of swimming and adaptive (handicapped) swimming and weight training and conditioning, the most rewarding and inspiring teaching I have ever done (of course it helps that I am handicapped myself). I stay mostly wet, play in the ocean lots, kayaking, riding waves, travel some. volunteering as a marine naturalist, trainee mentor for Channel Islan...Expand for more
ds National Marine Sanctuary, volunteer naturalist of the year for 2005, volunteering at Church, facilitating a fellowship for the otherwise abled ("Building Bridges For Christ"), working on keeping 2 new hips and 3 new knees functioning, fighting a chronic mrsa staph infection, removed from my leg (from surgery, 18 major surgeries in the last twelve years) staph cannot be cured and may eventually do me in, had some staph morph into cancers, got these cut out of my beautiul legs (now the world's second ugliest), now an mri says what my body and my Orthopede have been teling me for a while, I am a wreck, but then at 74 I am well past my 5 yesr 50,000 and have led a good life. I'm still loving life, the mind, heart, soul and spirit are wonderful, and still don't have or wear pants, shoes ties or suits (other than swimming and wet suits) still chasing the perfect sunset and the perfect wave. I am blessed with so many wonderful friends, of many years, many former students. Life is good, handicap, disabilities and all. I pray you are as blessed.... Feel free to call or drop by...
School
probably the highlight of my school career was attending a one room red brick school house in Pea Ridge Missouri, complete with water well, outhouse, pot belly stove, even grades one year and odd the next and a teacher 203 years old. Also attended (sentenced to) Southern California Military Academy in Long Beach, not good times. graduated from Nordhoff HS in ojai, 1954, 3 years Ventura College, sports and student government, 9 years to get degree from UCSB, majors in Hist and I.A., minors in P.E., Oceanography, Psych, lots of scattered graduate work, played water polo and swam competitively, totally average!
