Wayne's Story
Life
Currently living in my hometown and occasionally run into old classmates. It's odd, and kind of nice, to meet people from HS so long after graduation. My life has taken so many different turns since 1979. Not much happened in Roch after graduation so in '81 I left to try my luck in the oilfields of Texas. By the time I got there the oilfield jobs had more or less dried up. I worked in a foundry for awhile and was glad to see that the processes were done pretty much the same way in that industrial setting as they were back in Mr. Schultz's class in 9th grade at Kellogg. I also worked as an electrical lineworker there for 5½ years before returing to MN in '87. I also worked part-time in a convenience store for about 3-4 of those 5 years - met some VERY interesting people during that time. Texans are a unique bunch of people - very likeable and mostly friendly, once you get past the underlying disdane for 'yankees' :)
I've really enjoyed life since High School - I didn't really enjoy High School all that much. If it hadn't been for my friends I think I may have ended up leaving school altogether - my friends and family encouraged me to stay in school and at least get a diploma - so that I did - barely.
School
School - well, I didn't really take much from high school - I chose to screw off in HS instead of 'applying myself' as all the older, wiser ones (parents, grandparents, guidance counselors, pasters, etc) would urge me to do on numerous occasions. I chose to do things MY way, which as it turned out, w...Expand for more
as completely opposite of the choices I'd like MY kids to make. It's wierd how we become our parents without even realizing it until one day - WHAMMO - you're just as valuable to your kids as your parents were to you. Sorry Mom.
Workplace
I've had several jobs over the years. I sat down once with my son and listed 30 different jobs I've had over the years since about age 14 or so. Some of them are repeats, like I worked as a convenience store clerk for a few different companies. I also worked at Perkins South - twice.
I am currently working in the IT industry - again. I work for Vision Solutions. We have a product which helps keep data on 2 or more IBM AS/400 systems synchronized.
I also drive motorcoach part-time. There's something about being on the road that is beyond enjoyable for me. It's the freedom of not being tethereded to a desk, and I get to see a lot that I wouldn't normally see - especially wildlife - very cool. I saw 4 Bald Eagles one day near Wabasha while on a delivery route I used to drive. What a blessing to be able to watch these majestic birds on just because I happen to drive near their habitat and see them up close - sometimes too close. One of them flew so close to my truck I thought for sure it was going to bite the proverbial dust.
I feel that I've led a fairly interesting professional life in that I've been given the opportunity to do work that interests me, and I'm not afraid to try new things even though a little voice inside my head says there's no way that I could ever do THAT.
