Wayne's Story

Life After graduation from MTSU, several months working for an insurance company that supposedly wanted someone for their public relations department found me calling on fixed income little old ladies telling them they needed to buy more insurance. An opportunity to work as a promoter and general manager of a NASCAR sanctioned race track found me moving the wife and son to Maryland. Soon the wife and son went back to Tennessee and I spent a year trying to make a severely-restricted race track work. After the track closed at the end of the season, I headed to Tennessee to be sports editor of a five-day-a-week newspaper near Knoxville. Nine months later I got a call to do the same at a daily paper in Middle Tennessee. Soon, I was transferred to a twice-weekly paper in another town to be the paper's assistant editor. Shortly after that transfer, the editor left and I became the editor until early 1982 when I returned to auto racing as editor of an auto racing newspaper near Charlotte, NC. Working for that paper saw me traveling all around the eastern half of the U.S. taking pictures and w...Expand for more
riting stories of short track races on dirt and asphalt tracks as well as selected NASCAR races. In 1988 I moved to a racing newspaper that specialized in NASCAR racing. While there, I assisted in developing two new publications and became the editor of both. I ended up buying one and tried to make it go with limited funds ... accepted an offer from a man in Pennsylvania to buy it from me (bad move) ... stuck with it a couple more years waiting to be paid for the business ... decided to go to work for a wood products company (manual labor) while doing correspondent work for a daily newspaper in central PA. The correspondent work for that paper led me to my last job (that lasted a little more than 10 years) at a daily paper near there. I was assistant city editor, business editor and food editor when corporation decided to "regionalize" in Jan. 2009, ending my tenure there. Son, who lived with me from the mid-80s to the mid-90s, is now married and I have a young grandson who lives more than 12 hours away ... so I don't get to see them very often. Looking to relocate much closer to them.
