Wayne's Story

Life Here's the readers digest condensed version of what I've been up to for the last 22 years. I bummed around for about a year before I thought it would be a good idea to go back to school. I was on the "Pay as you go when you could afford it plan" of going to college, but I finally graduated from Bowie State University in 1994 with a B.S. in Communications Media. I worked briefly as an intern and in the traffic and continuity department at W.P.G.C AM and FM Stations in Greenbelt. Sounds impressive but it was'nt. I worked a variety of jobs over the years. I was a pari-mutual clerk(sort of like a bookie) at Rosecroft Raceway, Worked for a computer company, ran a catering company, sold insurance and did financial planning, worked for the Ford Motor Company as a customer service representative for a few years. Now all these seemed like dead-end jobs on the fast-track to nowhere until I got into what I'm doing now. Finally I thought I'd give Funeral Service a try. I got a part-time job working at a funeral home in Annapolis working visitations and doing removals. I liked it because it was something new everyday, and I was always looking for work where I thought I would make some sort of difference in people's lives. So in August of 2004 I packed my bags and moved to Loveland, Ohio outside of Cincinnati and attended The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Scien...Expand for more
ce. I graduated in September of 2005 and did my apprenticeship at the same funeral home where I worked as a student. Finished my apprenticeship and became a licensed embalmer and funeral director in the state of Ohio. I worked for a firm north of Dayton,Ohio briefly, but I did'nt see eye to eye with the ownership because he had what I call certain ethical and integrity issues. I got a call from a firm southeast of Nashville, and they made me an offer I could'nt refuse. It's been a good thing so far. Life is good. I have a girlfriend I've been seeing for awhile, she happens to be a funeral director too, met her at Mortuary School. I like what I do for several reasons because I'm good at it. I think I make a small difference in people's lives when they're grieving for their loved ones and it may make they're pain and suffering a little easier. Just the other day I received the nicest compliment. Woman who had been sick for a long time passed away. I did all the work on her and got her ready and when the family saw her the son told me, "Momma looked so good I thought she was gonna jump out the casket and start dancing" Just a testament of what good embalming and cosmetics will do for you. So there it is... I'm on here to connect or reconnect with some of you from my Alma Matter. If your out there drop me a line it would be good to hear from you. Wayne
