Wayne's Story
With another holiday approaching, its time for the annual update. I'm so grateful to have reconnected with so many friends from EHS here and on Facebook. Especially my dear friends Steve Westra and Frank Day. There are many more friends I have been looking for and hope to reconnect with. EHS was such a big part of all our lives.
I went to DU after we graduated from EHS. DU was an amazing experience. Some of the teachers there were really important to me. I also joined a wonderful fraternity called Beta Theta Pi. I made many terrific friends there. Not the least of which is Jerry Montgomery (also from EHS), my dear friend and pledge father. I was lucky to serve in student government at DU and also had a great experience on the University Debate Team. I studied International Relations there and really thought I knew what the world was about. That was a silly thing in retrospect.
After DU, I served a 2-year mission in the Philippines for the Mormon church. I spent the entire time on a rural island called Mindanao where things were very different from Colorado. Wow! That was a real eye opener and heart breaker. I never realized just how lucky we were in the US until I lived in the third world. Nothing I learned at DU prepared me for the disillusionment I would find in the Philippines.
I moved to California after that and eventually married a very nice filipina. We were together for almost 14 years. Some of you may have met her at a reunion we attended a few years ago. She is a very nice person. We ...Expand for more
raised a son from her previous marriage. He's grown and married himself now and has a magnificent daughter (yep...I'm a grandpa). We had a small medical equipment business during those years and lived in a charming little place called Ojai. However, I'm divorced now and all that has changed. But, I am also remarried.
I am living with my wonderful husband Charlie (yes, its not a typo). We are proud to be one of the 18,000 same sex couples who were married in California. We have been together almost seven years and live high in the mountains ablove Los Angeles (ironically a Mile High and we have plenty of snow). I finally "came out" shortly after the last class reunion. For many of you that may not come as a surprise. But, for me, it was a long journey to getting real. Along the way, after meeting my beloved husband, I had a few health problems. As it turns out, I wasn't blessed with great eyes. I won't bore you with details. Suffice to say, getting old aint easy. But, I have no complaints.
I currently work in a very challenging part of the healthcare industry, consulting in clinical research. We try to develop new treatments for neurologic disorders like Parkinson's disease and Epilepsy.
Theater, speech/debate, football, and friends are all cherished memories from EHS. AUSA student government, Debate team, Beta, and Pioneer Hockey are likewise cherished memories from DU.
I couldn't be happier with my life. I love hearing from old friends. I hope all is well in your lives. Drop a line if you like.
