Wayne's Story

I went to Ready Springs Elem School, 3rd grade thru 6th. Attended 7th grade in the old Grass Valley High School. Ready Springs School changed to grades K-8, so I went to 8th grade back at Ready Springs. Attended Nevada Union High School for grades 9-12. Played Football, Basketball and Baseball. Wasn't really big enough to play football, but I was out there, wasn't very talented in Basketball, but did okay in Baseball. Graduated from NUHS in 1970. Went to several junior colleges over the years. Married my wife Cheryl in 1974, we celebrated 46 years this March 30, 2020. I went into the Air Force in Oct 1974, Cheryl and I were stationed in Grand Forks, North Dakota. After the Air Force I worked for Sacramento County as a Draftsman, then got hired as a draftsman for the State of California Dept. of Water Resources, downtown Sacramento, in 1982. I worked my way up till I got a job I liked, as a Land Surveyor. Retired after 28.5 years in 2010. We moved to Sequim (pronounced "Skwim"), WA. We decided to move to the east side of the state for better hunting, lower property prices and less people. Bought 28 acres and a house for not much more tha...Expand for more
n what we had in Sequim with one acre and a small house. I was able to hunt Whitetail Deer, Wild Turkeys and Grouse on my own place. Loved it! We raised registered Irish Dexter cows (a miniature cow breed that stands waist high on me, full grown) that are good beef and can be milked. We had chickens, a couple pigs each year for the freezer and Cheryl had domestic Turkeys. We tried Alpacas, because Cheryl spins, knits and weaves, tried goats too. Sold the Alpacas and the noisy goats and started buying Dexter cows, one at a time as we could find them. Shot a chicken thieving coyote, he was killing our chickens in broad daylight 75 feet from the house, he is now a rug on the wall. Got my deer each year. Winter temps in the teens to low 20's and 3'-4' of snow. We had Moose, Elk, Deer, Black Bears, Cougars and Wolves in the area. Even had a Grizzly Bear come down out of the Selkirk Mountains north of us and was seen about 5 miles north of our nearest town, Newport, WA. Life is never dull around that area. Winters were just to darned cold and to much snow so we moved in March 2020 back to a better climate in Sequim, WA and close to Grandkids.
