Wayne's Story

I live in Acton, Massachusetts with my wife Susan and we have four grown children, Greg, Jonathan, Douglas, and Amy. Three children are married so far and we have eight Grandchildren at this time. In my young years I grew up in Manchester, CT and lived there until I was in my Sophomore year of High School. My family moved to Tolland and I spent the last two years of high school going to Ellington High. I was warmly received by everyone at Ellington and I made a good number of friends. After graduation, myself and three other Ellington graduates, Bob Knox, Manny Simmons, and Don Garrett, went to Boston to go to the Art Institute of Boston, a commercial art school. I met my future wife Susan in the summer of "66" when, after my freshman year, I stayed and worked in Boston with Bob Knox. We all went our separate ways after the first year and I lost track of my roommates after that. After art school I was drafted by Uncle Sam and was sent to an Asian country of Sam's choosing. What a guy! I moved back to Boston when I got back from "vacation". I got my first job in the art field at that time and married my girlfriend, Susan. My first art job was working for a jigsaw puzzle and game company, American Publishing Co., in Watertown, MA. I learned quite a bit there, giving me the foundation of knowledge needed to pursue a career in commercial art. American Publishing gave me my first opportunity to have an illustration published when I illustrated dinosaurs for a j...Expand for more
igsaw puzzle. After working there I went freelance and have been in my own business since 1976. Susan and I bought a house in Acton, MA and began raising our family. When our children were all in school, Susan rejoined the work force by starting her own bookkeeping business which she still does today. In 1979 at age 30 I was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis). I slowly lost muscle control on my right side but I have been blessed that the MS has been in remission since the early 80's. I wear a brace on my right leg and walk with a cane. My left leg is fairly strong and I began using my left hand to write, draw and paint. My illness has not interrupted my career in art or in raising our family. Over the years I have had many different clients, ranging from the Army Corp of Engineers, where I did brochures and illustrations to various game company's and book publishers. In the last twenty years I have illustrated children's books. I finished my 13th Sir Cumference book for Charlesbridge Publishing in early 2023. The Sir Cumference books are very popular "Math Adventures" that are found in many school libraries, classrooms, and town libraries. I continue to illustrate books and paint gallery "easel art" although I am not actively looking for work. I have a studio in The Umbrella, an old school turned into a art community in Concord, MA. I am there every day except weekends so I welcome any of you when you are in the neighborhood to come and visit. Wayne
