Wayne's Story

Life Hey everyone, my story is short and to the point. After graduation, I moved to Butler for 2 years, got in an accident, I'm disabled now. I did a story about my life before and after the accident,I'll put it below. Other then that, I'm still alive, have run into people who said "I thought you were dead, heard about your accident, didn't think you made it" but guess what world, I'm still here.... 1) Who are you? Hello all you party animals. My name is Wayne. I grew up about 4 miles south of Auburn Indiana. When I was 10, I think, I started playing baseball, and I was good at it, if you don't believe me just ask my dad. He'll tell you how good I used to be at it. As a matter of fact I helped lead my pony league team in Auburn to the championship game, and we won it. IT WAS GREAT!!! But I've got some news for you all, PLEASE DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, LOOK AT WHAT AND WHERE IT GETS YOU. 2) What were your plans before the accident? Well, my plans were to graduate from Dekalb High School, which I did, back in 1985. I thought about going to the big leagues in baseball, but I never made it that far. Why, you ask? Well it's a long story, but if you're willing to listen, I'm willing to try to tell you in the best way I can. 3) What happened? I used to be known at Dekalb High School for my good drugs, as 1 of the biggest dealers in the school. When I was still going to school, I drank about every weekend with my cousin Jim and a friend, his name's Boomer. When I was in school I started doing drugs. I'd do a hit of acid every other day, and I'd get high every day, before and after school. As a dealer, I'd have 100 hits of acid, 100 beaners, and an ounce of pot already rolled into joints. I'd take them to school with me and by the end of the day, I'd be ready to go get more of everything. When I got out of school, I got a job at Foley Pattern, a foundry in Auburn. Then I started drinking on a daily basis. Every day when I'd go to lunch with the guys from work, we'd stop at the liquor store and get a bottle of whiskey. That would be our lunch. About 6 months before I graduated, I met the sister of my cousin's girlfriend. We moved in together in the big party town of Butler Indiana. Now this stuff, I don't know if it's true, because when I came out of my 3 month coma, in Parkview, I didn't know where I was, when it was, or why I was even there. Anyway my dad told me I caught my girlfriend, whose name was Kathy, in bed with somebody else. I was so mad I went out with a friend, his name is Richie, and got loaded, trashed to the hilt. I was so drunk that I can't remember anything that happened the day of the wreck. On my way home I hit somebody. Her name's Linda. The results were, I ended up in a coma for 3 months. She didn't get hurt a bit. She told me her dad was happy, cause now he could get his car fixed up. She told me she knew me from a couple parties we were both at in Butler. 4) How did you rec...Expand for more
over? How long did it take? I woke up in Parkview Hospital sometime before Thanksgiving of 1987. I had to go to therapy 5 days a week. I went to physical, speech, and occupational therapies, all in the morning for the first 3 months. But then I was doing so good with my walking, that my physical therapist asked me if I wanted to come once in the morning and once in the afternoon, I told her yes I would. So for the next 3 months I went to physical therapy twice a day. Then 1 day in March of 1988 my dad came into my room on a Friday morning, I asked him what he was doing there. He told me that medicade couldn't afford to pay for me living at the hospital, and he was taking me to the Irene Byron Health Center. I thought he was going to take me home, but no such luck. 5) What are your plans now? Can you get a job? Where will you live? I'm living on my own now, but I don't get much company. I know everybody else is busy, except me. I had a job at a nursing home in Auburn part time. I only worked 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, but I liked going to work, even though I couldn't talk very good, but the people I worked with liked me, at least I think they did. As far as my plans go, I'd love to find a nice lady to spend time with, to get to know better, to share the good times as well as the bad times. So I can get out and enjoy my life, but just sitting in my apartment all by myself, with no company isn't helping me any. But I'm back in my home town of Auburn, where the most important people in my life live, my dad and mom. 6) How has your life changed? My life has changed in a great number of ways since my wreck. I couldn't walk when I woke up in the hospital, I didn't know any of the faces around me, and I couldn't say yes, no, or maybe, because if you were in a coma for 3 months, I'll bet you, you wouldn't be able to walk or talk either. But the biggest drawback of all, is not being able to carry on a conversation with the people I love, as a matter of fact I can't carry on a conversation with anybody. You see, I can't talk because of the brain damage I suffered, so I feel just like a little baby. 7) What should people remember most about your experience? There's a lot of things I didn't tell them, but I think the one most important thing they should realize, is that all of the T.V. commercials you see, all the things you read or hear about drinking and driving are true!!! So if I were you: I WOULDN'T DO ANY DRINKING IF YOU KNOW YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO DRIVE ANYPLACE, BECAUSE LOOK WHAT IT GETS YOU. I DON'T THINK ANY OF YOU WANT TO BE IN THIS CONDITION, LIKE ME. IT'S NO FUN TO BE LIVING ON YOUR OWN, WITH HARDLY ANY COMPANY, EXCEPT MY ASSISTANTS THAT COME TO HELP ME GET READY FOR ANOTHER BORING DAY AND ANOTHER LONG LONELY NIGHT. THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING, I'LL TRY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY. JUST REMEMBER MY MEMORY AND VOICE AREN'T WHAT THEY USED TO BE.
