Wayne's Story

Life When I graduated from BHHS in 1954, and Miss State in 1958, I spent the next twenty years moving many times. I finally settled in Nashville in 1976 and have lived here since. From high school I went to Miss State, Pensacola FL (pro baseball), Memphis, Augusta GA (army) Gainesville GA (teaching and coaching), Fort Worth TX (seminary), Bluefield, VA (college admin and teaching), Fayetteville AR (grad school, coaching, admin, and teaching), Washington DC (US Senate staff) Nashville TN (TN Dept of Ed), Chattanooga (college admin, teaching and coaching), Nashville (college admin, and foundation president). Retired in December 1999. Did a lot of radio and TV announcing as an "extra" enjoyment during much of my college student days and later career. Also did some scouting for two major league baseball teams. Preached a good bit when asked. Married Faye Wellborn in 1961 while in seminary at Fort Worth, Texas. Have one son, an attorney, Wayne Jr. (Lyn) born 1965, and three grandchildren, Wayne III (Trey) born 1993, Carolyn born 1996, and Annessa born 1999. Have one dog, Smokey, a black lab born April 2002. My FIRST pet dog. An update,August 2003: Now looks like another move. As soon as our Nashville home sells, we will move back to Fort Worth, Texas, "to keep the family together." My son, Lyn, has just accepted a position as Senior Litigation Attorney with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad HQ'ed in Fort Worth. So it is back to the scene of the crime--Faye and I were married in Fort Worth 42 years ago. I told her that it felt funny to be moving somewhere to do nothing. "What difference does it make?" she asked. "You are doing nothing here." Ah, but I'll be playing with three grandchildren. Would like very much to hear from classmates and f...Expand for more
riends from all years, including current ones. School Went to Holmes School all eight years, and to BHHS all four years of high school. Gladys Peterson (sixth grade) was my favorite elementary teacher and I loved Albert Kelley, the pricipal. Cookie Parr was my favorite high school teacher (English). I lettered four years in baseball, and was a scrub in football and basketball. Had a good record in baseball and received a baseball scholarship to Miss State. College Attended Miss State on a baseball scholarship from 1954 to graduation in 1958 with a B.S. degree in English Education. Was an average student, but active in extra-curricula stuff like student government, ROTC, Baptist Student Union, radio, preaching, etc. Later went to grad school at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, the University of Arkansas, and the University of South Carolina. Earned the B.D, and M.Div. degrees from Southwestern, and the M.Ed. and Ed.D degrees from Arkansas. Workplace Most of this is in my Life Biog. Military Was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Military Police Corps from ROTC at Miss State. Back then we had a choice of six month active duty and seven and a half years reserve, or two years active duty and four years reserve. I chose the six months active duty because of my pro baseball hopes. Spent my entire active duty at Fort Gordon GA where I graduated from Military Police Officers Basic School, and as a platoon leader with a training company there. Also had experinece with counter-intelligence back when Castro was taking over Cuba. Was in the active reserve until 1969 when I was discharged as a captain. Did further "militay stuff" when I served on the staff of a US Senator who was chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
