Wd's Story

I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was an interesting idea. As it turns out, they were right. These days, I enjoy meditating to replenish my energy. I also like to relax with a good romance novel. For me, the wildest thing I ever did at school was trying out for the cheerleading squad. In those days, a male in the tryouts was unheard of. When I look back on my life, my hero has been my father. He has always been a rock of support, and he was my staunchest supporter when I became a published author. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Gary Hines, because of our history of mutual respect and regard as well as my days as an original member of the Sounds of Blackness. Obsessions, eh? In my household the major ones are a love of "I Love Lucy," "The Cosby Show" and classic movies (yes, the golden age of Hollywood era). Recently, the original "Perry Mason" series and "Extreme Home Makeover" were added to the list. The choices in the Q&A didn't include big band music or old school music, so I'll add that here. Hmmm....biggest surprise in my life. Hands down, it was becoming a father at the age of 47, a time when many of my cousins and classmates were becoming grandparents. That "surprise" has been one of my greatest blessings. This is good. I now have a thorough understanding of what my parents went through when I was a kid (as I hear the unspoken laughter in their voices). In my case, the apple didn't fall far from the tree. He is quite intelligent, and it's necessary to stay 2 or 3 jumps ahead of him. I've learned patience, consistent standards and the importance of the example I set for him. I've also learned how important it is for parents to support their children in their school activities. She's long since passed, but I would have loved to have seen ...Expand for more
Mrs. Shutts again. Being in her creative writing class gave me an outlet for my passion for the written word, even though I wasn't too keen on book reports. I believe that we create and are in charge of our own happiness, and we do so every day. Teaching has opened new opportunities for me these days. I am also happy that my dream of becoming an author and poet is now a reality. These Story Wizards are a trip sometimes. Now I must search the data banks of my memory for the whereabouts of my first crush. Oh, here it is, sitting on a 5-1/4" floppy disk....it was on an actor, and his last whereabouts were in New York many years ago. My best friend would tell you I have an offbeat sense of humor, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as quiet. I don't know if telemarketing is considered weird, but that stint was blessedly brief. I share my home with my son (which I find endlessly fascinating) and my spouse, who hands down is the love of my life. As a former pastor of mine told me, I received a ridiculous blessing when I received an award and a publishing contract from the International Society of Poets in 2004 for a poem I submitted about my son. That contract lead to the publication of my second book. As far as do-overs go, I would have learned about and consciously applied the Law of Attraction much sooner. Then again, in looking at my life, I was using it and didn't know it! Surprise at my high school reunion, eh? Two possibilities: being an African-American gay father (then again, that may not be a surprise to everyone) and having the honor of meeting Rosa Parks before she died--she truly was an inspiration. When I met her in 1992, the first thing that struck me was that she could have been anyone's pleasant, unassuming grandmother. Who knew that she would change history with just one word?
