Wendell's Story
Within a month of graduation I was flying to San Diego CA to report for Boot Camp in the Marine Corps. After six months of training, I went by ship from San Diego to DaNang VN. I was a rifleman, got myself shot by the bad guys in the right lower leg, was sent to Vietnamese Language School on Okinawa, and returned to VN. Was assigned to S-2 Intel (imagine that!) as an Interrogation/Translation Team Scout. I worked with a Vietnamese Army translator and Viet Cong defectors in gathering information. I returned to the US and spent another 4 years in the Corps with another tour in VN from '70 to '71. When I was released from the Corps in '71 I worked at United California Bank as an Instalment Loan Officer. Great day work but at night I was a repossesor of vehicles. Unfun! years. I was in the Active Marine Reserves for 6 years in charge of communications with an 81mm mortar platoon, and also had a great experience of working at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library for 2 years as a docent. My wife and I have moved up to a small town in the Northern Panhandle of ID called Bonners Ferry in 2004. We have 3 acres of unfenced land so our neighbors are mostly deer, birds, squirrels, with occasionally moose, a bear, wild turkeys, and stray coyotes and wolves. We're now awaiting the arrival of fawns. They love to romp on the grass while the does watch from the forest. I have 3 step-children with 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. I married into a package plan (noone was pregnant when Carol and I were married 27 years ago. We are having a lot of fun and love the area and people that share our lives.
