Wendell's Story
Life
About a year after High School, I went to Alaska for the summer. 15 years later.... I didn't make many visits "outside" during those years. While living up north I tried my hand at several different types of work. Everything from fishing, to building houses, to heavy construction. I even spent 1 summer working on the Alaska railroad.
I eventually got interested in Land Surveying, and worked at this for several years. I enjoyed this work very much as it gave me a variety of challenges, and excellent opportunities to travel. I visited several rural Alaska communities, some of the Aleutian Islands, and the north slope oil fields. It also allowed me to take time off to hunt, fish, and ski.
In 1986 I had an opportunity to go to New Hampshire. I spent the next few years living in Nashua. I saw a lot of New England (a bit of Canada (Montreal mostly) and a too short visit to Washington DC.), picked up a funny accent, and decided some place sunny was next. So off to Arizona. After a year of enjoying the Arizona sunshine I returned to Eureka to attend the electronics program at CR. For the next two years I worked very hard and was rewarded with an interview with Hewlett-Packard.
In 1993 I started working at the HP site in Corvallis, Oregon as a technician on one of the high volume inkjet pen manufacturing lines. After a few line transfers to Puerto Rico I decided it was once again time for a change...Expand for more
. In 2002 I started working on a BS in Computer Information Systems, which enabled me to secure a position as a systems support technician at HP. In 2006 I got caught up in one of HP's RIF programs. This gave me the incentive to finish my BS and pick up several Microsoft certifications. For the past few years I have been employed as a Technical Support Engineer with Symantec.
I still like to travel and I still do a little skiing, in Oregon, or California (or in Colorado when I can). I return to Alaska (infrequently) to fish. A few years ago I met a Chinese woman through a mutual friend (her cousin), so I finally got to use that passport. I have been to China, 5 times in the last 4 years. And now that we are married I am guessing that there will be a few more trips in the future. We finally got through the immigration process and she is now living with me here in Oregon.
It looks like a while since I've updated this. In 2015, Symantec let 150 of us go. But we would get support for retraining. I thought I might try accounting. Big mistake. The math was a breeze. But the rest didn't meet expectations. The school had insisted that I transfer all previous college credits to them. A glance indicated I could complete a degree in general studies. I graduated one month before I got my first social security check.
I haven't had the time to revisit this profile for a while. Thanks to all that stopped by.
