Wendy's Story

I was born in S.L.C.,Utah. My Ancestors on both sides, were early Utah settlers. My Mother was from Bingham,Utah and My Father was from S.L.C. He graduated from The U of Utah with a degree in Fine Arts, and became a graphics artist. My parents divorced when I was about 3.They were a most mismatched pair. My Mom was dazzled by his killer good looks...dancing skills... and he was an art student. They were however completely incompatible. After 1st grade we moved to Alexandria,Va., when my mom took a new job at the Pentagon. At the beginning of my 7th grade year at John Adams Middle, they began integration in the Alexandria public schools. It was a crazy time adjusting to the changes. It was much more volatile at the High Schools. According to my sister, Hammond(grades 9 and 10 only)had a highly stressed atmosphere... violent at times. The police were there the first day. It was quite the drama. She went to T.C.Williams(grades 11 and 12 only) the second year of integration and was a cheerleader for the famous "Remember the Titans"(movie) football team. The football team did sing "we are the titans...mighty,mighty titans", but they were echoing the cheerleaders that they were flirting with on the sidelines. I was in middle school at the time and it was much more calm. I really enjoyed going to school with the new students. They were so fun. At least those that weren't angry. There was a lot of soul music, dancing and singing with boom boxes at school. I was a cheerleader(captain)my freshmen year at Hammond/T.C. so I had to learn the Titan cheers. I made the squad again in 10th grade. . That summer of 74 I lived in Ogden,Utah with my cousin Dayle Wallace's family. I stayed for half of my sophmor year and went to Bonneville High in Ogden until Jan. 75. I was a bit of a wild teenager and that is why I was sent to live in Utah for a time. I'm glad I went though because I met the most amazing friend there, Clay Blackwell. It was heartbreaking for me to leave when I went back to live with my family in Virginia. We moved to West Springfield,Va. where I graduated in 77. At WS high school I kind of kept to myself. My closest friend was in Utah and my newer friends were graduating or graduated already. I should have made more new friends. My favorite WSHS teacher was Mr....Expand for more
Tugwell. He taught history in such an entertaining way that I still love history. I worked full time at the Design Store in Springfield Mall during high school, and for a year in Georgetown D.C. after high school. We moved to an apt. in Washington D.C. where I attended the Corcoran School of Art and studied figure drawing. It was a very interesting and very "cool" place to go to school. But,I needed a change and I couldn't wait to get out of the big city. So I went to Ricks College, in Rexburg,Idaho,(BYU-Idaho) and majored in French. I met my husband Ken there and we were married in 1980 after graduation. Our first Baby came to us four years later right on our anniversary. That is when my most important career began. I have been busy with all five of our children since then. We have four sons the oldest, Braden, is 26, Kelly 25, Jordan 22, and Aaron 17. They are really great kids and I had no idea being a mother of boys would be so fun. Our youngest, a daughter, Allison is 15. She is the toughest of them all but her brothers are not responsible for that....she came that way. She is very pretty, a go getter, and a really good girl. Our kids have been very interested in music and so our house always has someone practicing piano, flute, guitar, drums, or singing. For years we also had the trumpet, tuba and trombone. Sometimes our house really rocks... when their friends come over and they jam. Following Ken's career... we've lived in Utah, Texas, Massachusetts, Connecticut, California, and Idaho. But, we've stayed in Eagle,Idaho for the past 18 ytears so our kids could grow up in a nice quiet town. For the last several years I have worked in the local schools substitute teaching and working with students at the middle school during their free time at lunch. I've been able to really understand what is going on in the school life of my younger kids. Middle School is such a unique stage. They change so much in three years. I've gotten to know the kids there and what they're up to...Hmmm, I feel a little like a spy as well as a mentor. Their energy is amazing and I get a boost just being around them. And yes... there is a "Harry" in the family.... my Brother-in-Law. He insists that he is the "real" Harry Potter. And my kids have enjoyed bragging about him.
