Mark's Story
After graduating from high school, I kicked around at a couple different jobs, and hung around with Ken Le Francois (class of '71) and Bob Berger and Dan Kelly (both Class of '70). My first real job was when I started working in the railroad industry in 1974, for the Milwaukee Road in downtown Chicago Union Station. I met my wife Wendy on a blind date a few months later, she graduated from Cary Grove H.S. in 1973. She knew and went to school with Brent Basara's first wife. We dated for a little under 4 years and got married in 1978. We bought a house in Algonquin (Haegers Bend) 2 doors down from Ray Rout and lived there until 1981 when we moved to Bartlett, east of Elgin. We have three daughters Lauren, Megan and Erin. That's what happens when you dream about being surrounded by women when you are young. Lauren graduated from the University of Iowa and has been teaching Literature & English at West Aurora H.S. for the last five years. I guess I must have read one too many books to her when she was little. She is a good friend of Sean Harrington who played basketball for the University of Illinois a few years back, when they had a good team. Megan lives and works in Chicago and Erin is a senior in H.S. this year. I am still in the railroad industry and have worked also for the Soo Line, Wisconsin Central Ltd. and currently with the CN in the Business Development & Real Estate department in Homewood, IL. Wendy has worked in the banking / credit card business her whole career and currently is a manager in the Fraud department of the JP Mor...Expand for more
gan / Chase facility on Randall Road and the tollway in Elgin. Other than working, I have been keeping busy through the years volunteering at my church, coaching girls basketball and softball, and have been involved now for over 25 years with Special Olympics Northeast Illinois based in St. Charles. I still play in a park district softball league in the summer. Not bad I guess for an almost 55 year old "geezer". It took me about six years part time, but I got a B.A. degree from DePaul University about 10-15 years back. I obviously was more focused than I was in high school. We have relatives in California and Florida so we have made alot of trips there over the years. We are still here in Bartlett as of 2008, living in our third house with two cocker spaniels and a toy poodle. Erin recently conned us into adopting the toy poodle. I guess we like Bartlett. I went to the 20 & 30 year reunions and they were quite fun. I still bump into people from Carpentersville / Crown once in awhile. Dan Klinkhamer is a detective in St. Charles. As of a few years ago, Linda Hettinger lived / lives in Bartlett. Ken Zaccard either lives in Bartlett or down the road in Streamwood. My sister Mary married Ralph Johnson who went to Dundee H.S. and they live in Elgin. I keep up on some of what has been going on with the Dundee / Carpentersville people we knew through him. I probably could go on with this a little longer but I don't want to put anyone to sleep. Like Joe Walsh said, "Life's been good to me so far". Matter of fact, I have been real lucky.
