Wes's Story

First 20 years: I went to PLU for a year and met Kathy. We transferred to WWU together. I graduated with my BA in accounting in Dec '81. Kathy and I married in Jan. I eventually decided to join the Air Force. I enlisted since my only options for officer entry was navigator or missile jockey. After one and a half years, I was accepted for an education and commissioning program. The Air Force sent me to UPS for my BS in computer science (with a two-grade promotion three months after Taylor was born). Going to school at full pay, without having to work, and someone else paying all the education expenses is definitely the way to go. I spent six years flying a keyboard. I volunteered to get kicked out in '91 during the post-desert storm rif. I collected an MA in Information Resources Management from Webster U before I left the Air Force, qualifying me to work as the computer science department chair at City University. They are still using the basic format of the new degree program I designed. I was sick of academic politics after two and half years and left. I worked in customer service for Aspen Technology for nearly seven years. I had the opportunity to travel to Europe (Norway, the UK, Singapore, and the Netherlands), the East Coast (wouldn't want to live there) and the middle of nowhere (it's in Beulah, ND ¿ definitely don't want to live there) Since our last reun...Expand for more
ion: I was a widower for a short period of time. Kathy died in a hiking accident on Wallace Falls. I reunited with Alice whom I dated much of high school (she went to White River). We married in 2003. I was laid off from the computer industry and discovered I was sick and tired of computers - not customer service. I took a bus-driving job with Metro to keep my unemployment going only to discover it is a customer service job. I am enjoying it. I am a landlord. We bought a triplex in Ballard in 2007. It's great WHEN all you have to do is collect rent. I have been learning West Coast native formline art. I took a class from a First Nation carver while on vacation on Vancouver Island. We joined the Unitarian Universalist Church in Kirkland. Last year I had to dust off my accounting degree when I agreed to be their treasurer. I am the only male in the Seamsters Union, our quilting group. My daughter, Taylor (23), graduated from the UW - Tacoma last year. She is currently doing a teacher assistant internship at Annie Wright Academy and working in the electronics department at Fred Meyer. She is applying for graduate schools in psychology planning to pursue child therapy or school counseling. She is financially independent ¿ yeah!! I was on four wheels for a couple years when an accident resulted in a torn up thumb. I'm now riding a 2005 Honda VTX1800 on the darkside.
