Wes's Story
Life
Following my graduation at Memorial I worked over the summer for the City of Eau Claire as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor. Then, in the fall, I started at UW-Eau Claire in pursuit of a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. All the while I continued working for the city as a Lifeguard and Instructor (later being promoted to head instructor). Around my junior year of college, I was involved in the rescue of a near-drowning victim at the Delong Pool in Eau Claire. The experience had a major effect on my outlook on life. It was then that I started looking into a Fire/EMS career. Since I was nearly finished with my CS degree, I had no intention on dropping out of college. Still, my job as a lifeguard/WSI wasn't paying the bills, so I went to work for Royal Credit Union (of Eau Claire) as a Night Computer Operator. This job let me work at night and continue my studies during the day. In May of 1997 I graduated fro...Expand for more
m college with my degree and a few days later, applied to the City of Altoona volunteer fire department where I worked as a Firefighter/EMT for the next three years. At the same time I started applying for full-time fire departments. About a year later I left Royal Credit Union and landed my first "real job" as a computer consultant at Computer Business Solutions. Over the next year I went through the application process for Eau Claire, Saint Paul, and Madison fire departments. For those that aren't familiar with this process, it is extremely long and difficult. It can take over a year and is filled with extremely difficult physical and mental testing. In November of 1999, I got a break, the City of Madison contacted me for an interview. Two months later I was hired. After three months of boot-camp-like hell at Madison's Recruit Academy, I graduated in May of 2000 to become a full-fledged City of Madison Firefighter.
