Wesley's Story
School
Greetings to all my schoolmates from nursery school in old Colonial Heights to my neighbors and friends in Bloomingdale! Though we all had our ups and downs in school, I am glad to have spent my life with the folks who were there. I miss my friends so very much but am thankful that I carry the memory of them with me. I can remember the hours on playgrounds at Miller Perry and Colonial Heights, and in the gym at Ketron. I have returned to each place many times in various capacities as a teacher and college professor, and it surprises me how much of school life is your classmates. The buildings are nothing compared to the memories.
When I think back, I remember fistfights and kisses, and strangely enough, not much classroom. As a professor, I am somewhat perplexed by this, because I suspect that I am not the only one who went into a stupor when class started.
If you went to school with me then you remember bellbottoms, peace patches, leisure suits, afros, mohawks, and fast automobiles. Elvis was alive and the Eagles made every guy want a gi...Expand for more
rlfriend with a tan. Those in the Colonial Heights area remember the times at Sid's, the Chikn Shack, and the Dipsy Doodle. And, all true Wildcats mourn the loss of the Desta Cup and New Market. Those of an age also remember the trips down Wadlow Gap for refreshments, and the fun times at the Pizza Hut in Gate City on Sunday.
I am lucky to get to see some of my classmates from time to time. Although I have not gone to many reunions, I have managed to attend a few. Of course, the military, living overseas, and attending college have prevented me from attending, but it has not been for a lack of desire.
To the many teamates I have had over the years, I want to say that competition and fun cannot be had alone. I appreciated the experiences on the football field, diamond, court, and track.
I mourn the loss of so many of my good friends. Those of you who were classmates of mine know how many good people we lost at an early age. My heart aches that they did not get to enjoy a long life. I hope to see them again some sunny day as Vera Lynn said.
