Whitney Begeman:  

Life After escaping first from Woodhaven schools (at the end of freshman year) and then RCHS in '93, I headed to college. I graduated from UofM in 1997 and have been involved with social justice and service-learning work since that time. From May 1997 to August 2000 I lived in Indianapolis, Indiana and "found myself" so to speak. Indianapolis isn't the most exciting place to live but the work I did was very personally transforming. While in Indiana I participated in the National Service program, AmeriCorps, for one year; taught sex education at an urban middle school for another year; and then attended grad school to obtain a Master's degree in Non-profit Administration. After graduation I moved back to Michigan. Through my work and in my spare time I am dedicated to assisting and empowering marginalized people. Currently I direct a children's literacy program (through the University of Michigan) called, America Reads. The program impacts over 500 preK through third grade children each year who are at least one grade level behind in their reading abilities, and who are socially & economically disadvantaged.
