Whitney's Story

Life After escaping first from Woodhaven schools (at the end of freshman year) and then RCHS in '93, I headed to college. I graduated from UofM in 1997 and have been involved with social justice and service-learning work since that time. From May 1997 to August 2000 I lived in Indianapolis, Indiana and "found myself" so to speak. Indianapolis isn't the most exciting place to live but the work I did was very personally transforming. While in Indiana I participated in the National Service program, AmeriCorps, for one year; taught sex education at an urban middle school for another year; and then attended grad school to obtain a Master's degree in Non-profit Administration. After graduation I moved back to Michigan. Through my work and in my spare time I am dedicated to assisting and empowering marginalized people. Currently I direct a children's literacy program (through the University of Michigan) called, America Reads. The program impacts over 500 preK through third grade children each year who are at least one grade level behind in their reading abilities, and who are socially & economically disadvantaged. Outside of my "social justice life", I still enjoy dancing and like a good martini on the weekend. School 1980-1993, 13 glorious years of p...Expand for more
rimary and secondary education! I am thrilled with the prospect of finding some long lost friends from Gudith Elementary School and the ol' Brownstown subdivision. I have an uncanny memory for details and can recall just about anything from back in the days of elementary school. And for those of you who spent time with me in high school, I'm sure you'll recall- our adolescent and young adult lives were captured on numerous rolls of film. The pictures are now organized (with captions) into 6 photo albums and always make me laugh whenever I look at them! College College was the time of my life! The University of Michigan treated me well with numerous opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Grad school at Ball State University was an amazing learning experience and further prepared me for leadership in social justice and non-profit work. I am privileged to have had such a wonderful education and am commited to using it for purposes greater than myself. Workplace Through my AmeriCorps experience in Indianapolis I was able to identify my passion for assisting and empowering marginalized people, early on. I have really solidified my commitment to social justice/change work, and am quite confident that there is enough of it to occupy my lifetime!
