Bear's Story
Life
Do you remember me? Everyone called me BEAR, and they still do to this day. I'm happily married to a wonderful woman (2nd wife). We have 5 boys between the two of us. I am a Data Center Supervisor (computers) at one of the largest Medical facilities in the Central Valley (middle of CA). I've worked for the same facility for 13 plus years. I've lived in CA since 2/89. Life is good and I Thank GOD that I am still around to see my children grow.
School
Hopefully, you all will remember me as BEAR, the football and baseball player. I also ran track and wrestled. I was the Asst Manager for the JV Girls Basketball Team, as well as for the Varsity Girls. I announced almost every girls basketball game during my Senior year. I would consider myself as being a real nice guy.
College
My college life was ok, but not as fun as I would have like it to be. I went for 3 years. I attended Modesto Junior College (MJC) in Modesto, CA after I got out of the military (1989). I majored in Child Developement for the first year. After realizing that I did not want to work with toddlers, I changed my major to Liberal Stuides. While attending MJC, I applied to Florida International University (FIU) in Miami FL. Unfortunately, I did not have enough money to support my education and cost of living. I found this out only after I arrived in Florida. You would think that the personnel at FIU could have been more detailed and more thorough when it came to me uprooting all the way from CA. I drove over 3300 miles to attend FIU and was turned down due to a lack of funds. I could not even get financial aid at the time. Discouraged by this, I worked for 6 months in Miami (didn't like the city), I drove over to Milwaukee, WI to visit family and friend for a week, then I proceeded on to California again. I moved back in with my previous roommates and went back to MJC. I applied to other colleges as well, but got the same results. I stayed at MJC for another year and got burned out working 2 jobs and schooling full time. Before leaving MJC, I really wanted to become a teacher. I actually wanted to teach the rough necks in Junior High School. Well, after California (the great state that it is) started laying off teachers all over the state, I became angre and discouraged because two of my bi-ligual assoc...Expand for more
iations (who where teachers for almost 30 combined) were layed off. One moved to South Dakota and the other one became a Social Worker. Both had to take less pay in their new jobs. That particular year (1990) California laid off approximately 1100 teachers throughout the state. Anyway, I decided to say screw it all. I'll just pick another career when I find one that appeals to me. I did not get a degree while attending MJC, but I got a whole lot of schooling. I maintained a 3.0 average (believe it or not). It was really hard attending school fulltime and having 2 jobs. Despite my family not having money for my education, I did not want to make any excuses as to why I could not become more educated. I am the first and only personnel in my immediate family to ever attend college. I utilized my military money (which wasn't much) and the money I made from my jobs to attend college. I am living proof that there is always a way out of the rough life. You just have to be motivated to do it.
Workplace
I am working in the field that I disliked when I was in high school...computers. I am a Data Center Supervisor at Memorial Medical Center (MMC) in Modesto, CA. I have been working at the same facility for over 13 years. I started as a Transporter. I transported patients to different appointments within MMC. I had a great time being a transporter, but it was very difficult for me to not get attached to patients and their family members. I was highly requested by patients to be transported, due to how I handled them and due to how friendly I was. After 2 years of that, I became the Hospital Courier. I delivered a multitude of Medical Records and Medical Supplies to different facilities. This was a really fun job because I was always on the run and was able to put names with faces. After doing this for about 2 years, I was offered a Computer Operator job in the Information Technology Dept. Well, needless to say, I found my calling. I have been promoted 5 times already. I have been in the computer field since 1995 and do not plan on changing it. If by chance I have to chance my career before GOD decides to remove me from this earth, I will join my wife at home and we will run Daddy Daycare full time together.
Military
Yes, I was in the Army from Sept 85 to Nov 88. The rest is classified.
