Willard's Story
Life
After high school I attended UNH from 1959 to 1963, graduating with a BA in Sociology and a commission as a 2d Lt in the USAR. In 1964 I attended the Armor Officer Basic Course at Ft. Knox. My first tour of duty was with the 2d Squadron, 10th Cavalry at Camp Kaiser, Korea as a support platoon leader. My next tour was at Ft. Carson, CO from October of 1965 to March of 1968 as XO of HHC 5th Inf Div., CO of the 148th MP Co., and S-3 of the 21st MP BN. After Jungle School in Panama, I went to Vietnam where I served as CO of Co A, 5th Bn, 60th Inf of the 9th Inf Div, then Senior Advisor MAT 4/64 advising the VN 669 RF Co, and finally Assistant S-1, 1st Brigade, 9th Inf Div at Dong Tam Base. Returning to the US, I served at Ft. Dix, NJ until leaving the Army (with a case of Malaria) ...Expand for more
in January of 1970. After a year in Gorham, I moved back to Colorado Springs, CO in 1971. I worked in the insurance business for 30 years and with a credit card company until retiring in 2003. I am married to Janet, a retired schoolteacher, and have a son, Matthew. I have been active in my church and in the veterans movement, having served as commander of American Legion Post 5 (twice) and as chairman of Pikes Peak Veterans Council. I also served as Moderator of the Southeast Association of the Rocky Mountain Conference of the United Church of Christ. I am the immediate past commander for the Department of Colorado and Wyoming, Sons of Union Veterans of The Civil War. I have been an election judge for 32 years. Colorado Springs is a really nice place and I like it here.
