William's Story

25 Things most people don't know about me. 1. Patty and I were married on September 7, 1986. By that time I had already been working at Prime Computer for 9 years. 2. I've only had to fire 3 people in my entire career. 3. I started skiing 5 years ago. I ski on Atomic Metron IXs. 4. I have 946,500 lifetime United Miles (the miles actually flown) just 44,000 to go to million mile status. 5. It is completely true that I flew to Singapore for 2 days at Christmas time. The Christmas decorations on Orchard Road are second to none. 6. I've owned 9 Apple Macintosh computers including an SE30, a LC II, a Powerbook 140, a Performa 400, a Quadra 660AV, a G3 iMac, a G4 iMac, a Macbook Pro 17" and a new Macbook 15 i7. I paid $6000 for my first SE30 and a laser printer. 7. I have two cats -- Lire (calico female) and Baxter (aka boo, black male) and a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel named Soho. Soho's daddy is the top Cavalier in the US. 8. I originally wanted to be an architect. I went to school for photographic sciences. I became a marketing person. Go figure. 9. The oldest sweater in my collection is a 1994 alpaca Jhane Barnes. The newest is black and white striped Armani Black Label vest. I a lot of sweaters. 10. I place a very high value on loyalty. Many of the people I work with have been colleagues for 15 or more years. I expect the same degree of loyalty in return, but I don't always get it. 11. The most expensive marketing thing I ever did was commission a TV commercial for PictureTel. We spent a week in LA and it cost $575,000. The creative was by Carmichael-Lynch from Minneapolis and it still looks fresh today. Good creative is forever. 12. The most terrifying thing I ever did was whitewater rafting in New Zealand. Once a month they let water out of the dams for a week. It raises the difficulty to Olympic proportions. I have the pictures to prove it. 13. I've flown on a Lockheed Constellation and the Concorde. Two aviation extremes. 14. I married the perfect person for me. Patty is an organized, type A personality which keeps everything running smoothly while I conceptualize world domination. She's had the same business for 18 years which means the bills always get paid. Z is a pretty good combination of the two of us. 15. I'm a really good judge of people when it comes to hiring. I can find hidden jewels because I am not impressed with schooling or...Expand for more
titles. I can tell if someone has the soul of a marketer in a flash. 16. If anyone is looking for the perfect gift for me Abelour Abunadh single malt is the one. I was given a taste of this at a vertical single malt tasting at the Peebles Hydro Hotel in Scotland on Burns Night and I can't think of anything better. 17. I am in awe of the floral arrangements of Jeff Leatham. His work fills the Four Seasons George V in Paris and totally rewrote the book on floral arranging. A close second is the floral arrangements at the Chateau Bagnols in France -- fresh cut lavender abounds. 18. My very first job was in the darkroom of a photo shop in Brookline. I've worked in several photo labs including the now defunct GAF in Somerville. You had to dodge the seagulls circling over the Somerville incinerator next door to get to work. Digital is much easier and better, but film has a unique look that can't be duplicated. 19. I am named after my father's brother who was killed in France in World War II. 20. I recently found a song that I remembered from a Swissair flight 18 years ago on the web. All I remembered was two words -- Zouk La and google served up the band Kassav, the lyrics, and videos. It was a great tune and it's stayed with me for almost 2 decades. 21. My mom was one of the top paper sculptors in the world. The family business was designing and manufacturing kits of paper decorations for Christmas. We sold hundreds of thousands of them so there are probably a million people my age who've seen my moms work. She taught me how to cut paper, to appreciate the range and diversity of art, and to think creatively. Sadly she died in March after a long fight against Parkinson's 22. I'm extremely proud of my son Zach. He's worked so hard to get into Wheaton and finished his sophomore year above a 3.1. I've seen his assignments. They make me cringe. 23. Is it me or are 95% of all super bowl ads poorly conceived and executed? I guess a few million for production doesn't buy good ideas anymore. My personal wish is to be able to commission Tom Corder (previously at TeamOne now at Traffic) to create one for me. Tom was the creative force behind the original Lexus work and my print work for Verbind. 24. Someday I want to market something other than technology. 25. Someday Patty and I want to live in NYC. Now that Wall Street has imploded we may be able to afford it.
