William's Story
After NYSP I went to work for a commercial printer where I served my apprenticeship. After 2 years in the army and my apprenticeship I decided that I no longer wanted to commute from Long Island to Manhattan so I went to work at the Long Island Press in Jamaica, NY.
While working there I married and we had a daughter, Nancy. My daughter was born in November, 1975 and the paper closed in March 1996. After trying desperately and quite fruitlessly to find another job in printing I went back to school to learn electronics. After getting my certificate I went to work for a small company in Hauppauge, LI.
About a 1½ years later the company was bought out by Siemens AG of Munich, Germany.
This was really a great break for me. They had wonderful benefits, a 401...Expand for more
(k) program and a pension plan.
The company moved to Lake Mary, FL in 1991 and moved me with them. In 1992 my father passed away. My mother moved to Florida in 1995. Her health was poor and in 1999 caring for her took too much of my time so I decided to retire at 64 rather than wait another year. She passed away 6 months after I retired.
Fortunately my company had post-retirement benefits and that made it much easier to retire.
In 2005 my daughter, then living in NY, graduated from Briarcliffe College and decided that she could never afford a home in NY so she moved to Newnan, GA as did my wife and I. She now has her own home about 6 minutes drive from us.
It's been a good life and I feel very blessed for all of my experiences, both the good and not-so-good.
