William's Story

Hi everyone!. I hope to see you at the reunion in October. I've broken this down into: Military I attended the USAF Academy in Colorado from 1973 thru 1977. Majored in General Engineering and History. I remember much of the history and amost none of the engineering. I played on the squadron athletic teams all four years, Football 1 year, Soccer 1 year, Wrestling 1 year Lacrosse 3 years, boxing 3 years, Rugby 3 years. I enjoyed the athletic field much more than the academic building. I developed the greatest friendships of my life there. Three close friends lost their lives shortly after graduation (all in aircraft crashes) casualties in the Cold War. I went to pilot training in Del Rio Texas and got my wings in September of 1978. (Woops - forgot to say I got married in 1977 in North Richland Hills) After training in the F-4 I went to Okinawa in 1979 and flew operationally there, in Korea, and in the Phillipines until 1982. In 1982 and 83 we were in Austin where I was in Instructor Pilot in the F-4 and where our first two children were born. In December of 1983 I got orders to be in Phoenix for F-15 training in two weeks. So I abandoned my family and went to Phoenix while Susan packed up and moved back to Bedford with her folks. Graduated from Luke (Distinguished graduate) and went to Virginia to the 1st Fighter Wing. Our last child was born in Virginia in 1984. I decided that being in Texas was better than moving around the world all the time and we moved back home in 1986 when I left active duty. I started work at Texas Instruments in their Defense Systems Group and worked there on various projects as a Systems Engineer and Program Manager until 1990. They say that flying ruins you for any real work (Too lazy to work.. too nervous to steal) so I went back to flying in 1990 for Fedex. I stayed in the USAF Reserve at Carswell through this period. We built a house in Southlake and moved in in 1988. Fedex was a very slow go for the first 5 years. I flew 747 (F/E) with several trips to Saudi Arabia in support of Desert Storm. Then with the economic slowdown I went to the 727 (F/E) but in 95 things started to pick up and I went to the DC-10 F/E, F/O and then checked out as Captain in the A-300 in 2002. I moved from several jobs in the Reserves ending up in Washington at the Pentagon in 1998. I happened to be in the Pentagon when we got hit in 2001. After that I had to get in the game and was lucky enough to g...Expand for more
et a command billet in Pakistan in 2003. The next year I was in Iraq as Vice Commander of the 332 Wing and then as Commander on the 506 Group (Kirkuk Air Base). Anyway I finished out my Military career in the Pentagon in 2007. One of the high points was having all the hot 1973 girls cheering for me during the 2003 Homecomming Parade. Thanks. While I was in the Air Force I got to go to a number of schools: Distinguished Graduate, Squadron Officer's School 1981 Graduate, Air Command & Staff College 1984 Graduate Air War College 1999 My specific jobs in the Air Force were: Shift Chief, Deliberate Planning Cell, J-5, US Forces Korea, 1993-1995 Chief of Command and Control, 916 ARW, Seymour Johnson AFB N.C. 1995-1997 Chief, Crisis Action Plans, HQ USAF/XOOW 1997-1998 IMA to Chief, HQ USAF/XPPC 1998-2000 IMA to Chief, HQ USAF/XPPE, 2001 IMA to Director, HQ USAF/REX 2002-P Commander, 438 AEG, CENTAF, 2003 Vice Commander, 332 AEW, CENTAF, 2004 Commander, 506 AEG, CENTAF, 2004 Some of the Awards and Decorations from the Air Force were: Legion of Merit Bronze Star 1/OLC Meritorious Service Medal 1/OLC Air Force Commendation Medal 1/OLC National Defense Service Medal 2/OLC AF Outstanding Unit Award w/V, 4OLC Iraqi Campaign Medal Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal Korean Defense Service Medal Fedex: I was lucky enough to be hired by Federal Express in 1990. I started as a flight engineer on the Boeing 747. We flew around the world abd I did several military supply missions to Dharan Saudi Arabia in 1991 during Desert Storm. I also flew the Boeing 727 and DC-10. I enjoyed the DC-10 a great deal. We flew the Pacific Rim and I got to enjoy the Orient again. I checked out in the Airbus A-300 in 2002 as a Captain. I became a Line Check Airman in 2006. I enjoy instructing new Captains and First Officers in the Airplane. Hobbies: I enjoy reading very much. I especially enjoy history, biography, and politics (with a noir murder mystery now and again). My favorite 20th Century writers are Patrick O'Brian, Mark Helprin, and Robert Crais. Family: Susan and I met in 1976 on a blind date. Luckily for me she's still blind (to my faults at least) and we celebrated our thirty-first wedding anniversary this October 2008. Our three children are all married and live locally. We are happy empty nesters. We enjoy projects around the house, helping the kids with their houses or projects and going on vacation, especially the beach.
