William's Story
Stallion 500 Does anyone have a set of rules that we used for the event? I would like to put together a charity event for OATS (see story below) . I placed a notice on the alumni FB with no response. If you remember one rule or some other tidbit, {pictures?) to give me an idea it would be appreciated.
Very few of us can look at where we are at and say this is where I am supposed to be. OATS has afforded me that priviledge. I was laid off four years ago because of this failing economy. Additional physical probelms have forced me into disability. But, OATS has given me a way to give back. Less then ten minutes after being in the stable to see what I could contribute, Nancy, the founder of OATS had me working.
Those of you that ridiculed me choice of music have no idea how rewarding being a farmboy can be. But, its all of the things I have been exposed to,much with your help, that I am able to use here. Welding, carpentry, sports or just putting up with 'normal' people and much more. I have been able to build adaptive devices for riders, help rebuild the tack room this spring, almost daily little jobs (this is a farm after all), and explain what a nonverbal disabiled person could be going though to another volunteer.
I want to thank all of you for putting up with me and helping me be what I have become w...Expand for more
hat I am. So I hope you will come out. OATS is a charity worthy of all the assistance it gets. I mentioned the founder Nancy. We lost Nancy due to a heart attack last year. One of the special things about OATS is at her memorial the 'core' volunteers, as each of us, wth tears in our eyes, greeted each other we plegded our support for the program. Deciding what jobs Nancy had done that each of us could undertake.
Mine, by the way, is keeping the beautiful wooded trails clear. We sit on a 60% wooded 55 arce plot of land that is wonderfully suited to give our riders a peaceful setting for their therapy.
Horseback riding therapy goes back to 2000 or 3000 B.C. Referances to it can be found in Socrates' writtings. It was, at that time used by the Greecian Army with their troops. Amazing how it is now being used now for our troops. One number that continues to amaze me is that in a clinical setting the exercises will cause the spine to make 300 adjustments a minute, on a horse the spine makes 3000 adjustments a minute. And that is just the effect on the spine.
Boy this is getting long. So come out. Visit our horses, oh don't get me going there. They to are donated, and I can tell great stories about how they interact with riders, about many of them. We get some special horses. Got to end this. COME ON OUT, Bill
