William's Story

School I remember having a crush on two girls, Mickey Fisher and Marilyn Schumaker. My Jr. prom date went to South Shore and Sr. prom date,Marilyn Feldman, was the last blond to graduate from Englewood High School. Funniest thing I remember was the time a buddy and I were racing to see who would be first in the swimming pool. Our class was right after a girls class. The teacher unlocked the door from the boys shower before all the girls were out of the pool. Well he beat to the diving board and was in the middle of a great Swan dive, when we heard the girls giggling and saw them standing by their door. In those days boys didn't wear swim suits and there we were, naked as Jaybirds. Man, did we get kidded for awhile because we knew some of the girls and they would always giggle when we passed them in the hall. Favorite teachers were Norm Baldwin (Aviation),Agnes Shield (Division and English),Paul Erickson (Basketball) and My Dad (Aviation). I transferred to CVS in Jan '49 from Lane Tech when my dad started teaching Aircraft Engine classes. Was a member of the swim team (four man relay) the year John L. e coal strike. We only had one meet that year and it was with Hyde Park. They were reigning City Champs and we defeated them. I was a member of the Honor Society, Chess Club and manager on the basketball teams. Some of the fellows I remember hanging around with were John Richardson, Jim Jordon, Warren "Pete" Whitton, Chuck Spoolstra, Howie Stammerjohn, and Bob Peffer. After graduation I spent one semester at the U of IL (Navy Pier),then Wilson Jr. During the summer worked as a mechanic on my dad's race cars. Military: Drafted in 1956 into the Army. Ft Carson for basic training, then Ft Gordon for Signal Corp training in Student Co 26. After schooling was sent to Ft Lewis Washington headed for the 7th Cavalry in Korea. One day out of Yokohama, Japan my orders were changed and I was sent to Headquarters Co at Camp Fuchinobe. Worked in the communications repair shop until the Army started reducing its forces in Japan in late 1958, then home to be discharged. Married in May '59, divorced '76. Two children, and four grand-children. I'm currently engaged to my long time girlfriend. Still living in Chicago on the north side.
