William's Story
Life
I can't put my e-mail address in, but may it suffice that I work for the Dispatch, where informality rules -- I go by Bill on all but my paycheck -- and yet e-mail addresses are carefully standardized. First initial, plus last name.
That being said, let's talk: I've been married to Helen since 2000 -- a convenient year for my addled brain. She and I now live in Columbus, Ohio, where she is a librarian for a synagogue and I'm a copy editor for The Dispatch.
College
I flunked out of Heidelberg College as a freshman. Actually, I didn't flunk out, but I wasn't a good student. I moved to southwestern Florida and got a series of low-paying jobs and attended some classes at the community college. Then I caught on at the local newspaper, and didn't look back towards college until 22 years later.
When I moved to Cleveland, I realized I'd been wishing to go back to school for some time, and so I finally did, attending Kent State University. I graduated in 1999 with a B.A. in journalism and came close to completing my master's. I also taught journalism for a time as an adjunct.
I'd like to teach more, but a lot of journalists like to teach, so it will be some time, I think, before I can break in here in Colu...Expand for more

Workplace
There are days when I feel like a lucky person, having worked in the same business for what is now nearly 35 years. And, there are days when I'm kinda sick of it. But I suppose that's standard.
I've been a newspaperman since I was 19. I started at the Fort Myers, Fla., News-Press and have since worked for the Albuquerque Journal, El Paso Times, Bakersfield Californian, Arizona Republic, Arizona Business Gazette, Cleveland Plain Dealer, St. Petersburg Times and Columbus Dispatch. They're all over the map in a number of respects. But they all have one thing in common: They're all pretty traditional newspapers.
I've become involved in a group known as the American Copy Editors Society -- I was on the national executive committee right now -- and I spend as much time as I can talking about the profession, to students and other copy editors, and occasionally to people in the community.
I like my job, but now, about 10-15 years from retirement, depending on the stock market -- I've begun to consider my personal life a lot more than I used to. Right now, I'm working on some personal writing that might pan out into something fun. I'm also spending a lot of time with my religion of choice.
