I served in the USMC, 1966-72, then went to college. I received my PhD in 1982 and joined the UCLA English faculty, where I still teach today. I'm an avid scuba diver (technical and cave) and mountaineer. Most summers I travel, diving and climbing.
College
After serving in the Unites States Marine Corps, 1966-72, I graduated from Arizona State University in 1977, with a BA and MA. Then I went to UCLA for an MBA and PhD, receiving both in 1982. I have been a UCLA faculty member in the English Departmen...Expand for more
t since then.
Military
I went through basic training at Parris Island in the 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Platoon 3022, graduating on July 27, 1966. My senior Drill Instructor was GySgt T.W. Spence, with SSgt A. Cunningham, Sgt. L.L. Bess, SSgt R.E. Van Tassell, and Sgt. G.E. Loupin. I was honorably discharged in May, 1972. I would very much like to locate GySgt Spence. I am curently a Professor at UCLA, and GySgt Spence was the single most important influence in my life. I would like to say "thank you."
