William's Story
So we graduated from HS in 1971 and in those ensuing 45 years, much has transpired. I suppose my own bio is typical, in many ways, as well as, in many ways unique. After the HS thing came the college thing and I opted for the Purdue program in mechanical technology offered at IUK. After two years at the IU campus, transferred to the campus in Lafayette, IN and finished the Bachelor's degree in '75. Those were good times at Purdue-new friends, endless card games, cheap beer, Domino's pizza for Sunday dinner, suffering along with Purdue football, and even time for classes, books and study...BOILER UP! During the college years, I met my future wife...a girl also from Kokomo (KHS '71) and soon after graduation, married and moved to a small town in Ohio, north of Dayton where a new job with Monarch Machine Tool Co. awaited. I was with Monarch for 7 years as a design engineer and in 1983 moved on to Emerson Climate Technologies here in Sidney which is still my employer today. A builder of refrigeration and air conditioning components, I like to think that Emerson renders a great service to humanity in that we help keep people cool in the summer as well as preserving food and keeping our beer cold. NOTE: I do like beer...especially Yuengling lager. Let me know if you like Yuengling lager. So along the way bought a house, had two great sons, Ryan and Stephen, bought a bigger house, learned to snow ski, had a heart attack, and in '03 found myself single again (didn't quite make it to the "until death do you part" clause). Still single today....and still fond of beer.
These days, with the career thing winding down, I'm looking forward to retirement and what it has to offer. Ryan, my eldest son, is married and lives in New Hampshire. He and his wife, Margaret, have 3 great kids, Sean, Jack, and Katie. Living in New Hampshire, I don'...Expand for more
t get to see them as much as I like so maybe retirement will afford more time for visits. Stephen, my youngest son, lives in the Bay Area of San Francisco. Stephen isn't married yet but I keep hearing about someone named Jessica. With a son on opposite ends of the country, I've come to appreciate how large the US is and all the things it has to offer. I've been fortunate to be able to travel in the last few years and take in some sights. My favorite destination is Gettysburg, PA. Having discovered Gettysburg on a family vacation, I travel to PA 1-2 times a year. Seriously considering relocating there after retirement and making my final stand from a condo. There's plenty of volunteer projects in the military park there and plenty of cold beer at the Dobbin House Inn.
Other likes that found their way into this tale: Blues music, Canadian fishing trips, opera, NASCAR, summer concerts at the Fraze Pavilion and Rose Music Center in Dayton, Wiley's Comedy Club, Bengals Football, Reds Baseball, BBQ (in all its forms), books, golf (I can hit the ball but don't keep score), Civil War living history, vintage cinema, and beer (did I mention I like beer?). Almost forgot...the Highland bagpipes (started taking bagpipe lessons a few months ago. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?).
In closing, I wish you all well, good fortune, peace, and contentment. And please let me know if there's a class reunion. After all these years it would be a hoot to get together again. I still find my way back to Indiana on occasion usually to suffer through bad Purdue football and to visit Louie's Hotdogs and/or Martino's Pizza in Kokomo.
All the best,
Bill
