William's Story

Life It's April 2022, and it has been three years since I updated my profile. I'm not sure why I am even updating this because I am not sure anyone even reads these profiles. Since the last time I updated this, we have been unable to travel due to the pandemic, but recently, we finally began to travel again. We just returned from four days in San Diego last week where we celebrated our 50th anniversary. Last month, we traveled to Boise, Idaho to see my brother and in July we are going to Hawaii for ten days. We also have another cruise scheduled for the West Coast in November. As I have stated previously, we love cruising, ocean liner, as well as river cruising. As previously reported here, I left Sylmar after graduation to join the Navy. After "boot camp," I attended electrician school and ended up on a naval destroyer. Took two cruises to the South Pacific, including the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, and of course, Vietnam. After being discharged in 1966, I moved to San Jose and went to work for IBM where I worked for 40 years, retiring in November 2006. Started in the warehouse at IBM and eventually had a series of different jobs including product scheduler, product analyst, product planner and finally a service planner before retiring. Worked 12 years at the San Jose IBM plantsite before moving to Tucson in 1978. We also spent a year working at the Kingston, New York plantsite before returning to Tucson. I attended San Jose State College and dropped out in my senior year to move to Arizona, which is my only regret not obtaining my degree after coming so close to graduation. I do not believe that it hurt my career opportunities that I didn't graduate, but who knows? Got married in 1972, celebrated 50 years marriage to the same woman this year (2022). two daughters and two grandchildren. In retirement, we discovered cruising and have tried to cruise at least once or twice a year. We have taken about a dozen cruises in the past including trans-Atlantic cruises to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, and down the St Lawrence River to Quebec, Canada. In 2018 we took our first river cruise, a three week steamship cruise from New Orleans up to near Minneapolis. In June 2019, we took another river cruise when we flew to Portland, Oregon to cruise the Columbia River. When not cruising, we also enjoy visiting places like New York City and all it has to offer. We spent a week there in November 2019 and despite the cold, we really enjoyed the shows and being able to see the 9/11 Memorial Museum, One World Trade Center (tallest building in the USA), as well as the Rockettes show in Radio City Hall, and of course, seeing the Statue of Liberty. We have visited New York City four times and no doubt will return again in the future. I've put my genealogy research on my ancestors on the back-burner for now. It's been amazing to discover them going back to the time of the Revolutionary War. Now that the 1950 census has been released to the public this year, I will likely begin to do the research again. When we aren't traveling we enjoy season tickets to the musicals and drama shows that come to Tucson. We still love being retired and are lucky enough to be able to enjoy good health other than the usual age related nuisance things like cataracts which we had successfully removed in 2020. We still begin each morning with a five mile walk and we consider ourselves very blessed in our retirement, although we are both slowing down a bit. I still have some places that I want to see so we are hoping to be able to continue to travel in these uncertain times.
