William's Story

Life Dear Family and Friends, I hope this letter finds you happy and well! Time passes much too quickly these days. Thanksgiving has come and gone and we are already in the midst of the Holiday Season, but I promised to provide you with an update on how your donations have helped FUND A CURE and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. I cycled the 109 mile El Tour de Tucson century ride on Saturday, November 18, 2006 as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training, the largest endurance training/fundraising program in the world. I completed the ride in 7:44:37. You may wonder where I found the strength. I found it with the thoughts of our loved ones who still fight to survive and from the loved ones lost to these dreaded diseases. These patient heroes gave me the inspiration and the strength to cross the finish line. Even as I thought of each of you who have so generously supported me in this endeavor, I was constantly reminded of the patient heroes, for whom I rode in honor or memory of. The picture in my profile was taken the morning of the ride. I want to share my patient heroes’ names with you: Mary Ann DiDomenico, Tim Callahan, Glenn Ousterhout, Julie Schrews, Nancy Dern, Richard Lange, Ottavia Fontana, Joan Magnan, and Joy Parisi. As you can see I placed all their names on ribbon and pinned them to my jersey. They inspired me along with all those loved ones that you wished to remain anonymous as well. Blood cancers are the second most fatal form of cancer, second only to lung cancer. Leukemia is the leading cause of cancer death for children under age 20 and the leading fatal malignant disease of men and women under the age of 35. recently developed treatments and steady advances in research in chemotherapy, bone marrow, stem cell transplantation, and new targeted oral therapies such as Gleevec, bring us closer to a cure every day. Someone new is diagnosed with blood cancer every five minutes. Every ten minutes, another child or adult loses their fight for life. In 1974, the five-year survival rate for children with the most common form of leukemia was just 53%. Today 86% of children diagnosed will survive. The five year survival rate for Hodgkin's Lymphoma has nearly doubled from 40% in 1960 to 83% today. These research advances were achieved as a result of contributions made by companies, foundations and individuals, just like you. While I did not ask you to physically ride with me, each one of you rode with me in spirit. I asked you to personally join me in helping fundraise because that is a major part of this program. My goal was to raise at least $4,200 and I want to sincerely thank you for your helping me raise 192% of that objective. The good news is that together we raised $8,080 to FUND A CURE! I am thankful for your support and hopeful for a cure. Thank you again for your generosity and know that your support makes a difference! I wish each of you a holiday season filled with peace, happiness and joy. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Bill William J.
