William's Story

Military LCDR USN (ret) William J. Kaelber was born in Rockledge, Florida in 1959 and enlisted in the Navy in January 1982. After being meritoriously advanced from E1 to HTFN upon completion of apprenticeship training, he reported aboard USS Alamo (LSD 33) in June 1982. He served in the Repair Division completing one WESPAC. Attended Second Class Dive school and upon graduation in December 1984 he served in the Repair Department’s Dive Locker aboard USS Puget Sound (AD 38), home ported in Gaeta, Italy. Detached in December 1986 to attend First Class Dive School, and upon graduation as honor man he reported in June 1987 to the pre-commissioning unit of the USS Preserver (ARS 8) where he earned his ESWS qualification. He then reported in September 1989 to the Sea component of Mobile Diving Salvage Unit MDSU-TWO where he was selected for Chief Petty Officer in 1990. Assigned in September 1991 to USS L. Y. ommissioned as an Ensign in November 1994. His first officer tour was the USS McKee (AS 41) from January 1995 to April 1997 as the Ship’s BOSUN/Crane Officer for the first year and R-1 Division Officer the second year. Assigned in June 2001as the assistant port services for the USS Simon Lake (AS 33) in La Maddalena, Italy. Following tender turnover with the Emory S Land (AS 39) he checked aboard as First Lieutenant from May 1999 to April 2001. After completion of Prospective Executive Officer School, Lieutenant Kaelber was Executive Officer and Navigator of USS Grapple (ARS 53) from August of 2001 to May 2003 which included a Mediterranean deployment, a DPMF dry-docking and a Persian Gulf Deployment in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. LCDR Kaelber is authorized to wear the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with three Gold stars and the Navy Achievement Medal with one Gold star. I retired from the Naval Service in May 07 and am married to the former Eva A. Martinez of Rota, Spain. We have three daughters, Alexia, Silvia and Julia.
