William's Story

Life I enlisted in the Navy and spent a number of years in different areas. Florida was hot, Great Lakes was cold, back to Florida where I enjoyed the beaches and riding to Coco Beach from Orlando. Spent time in Idaho Falls where I hiked in the snow covered Tetons. Spent time in Treasure Island, CA, which is nothing more than an island (rock) between San Francisco and Oakland. Spent a few months in Bremerton, WA, which was fantastic. I found a large hill one day while riding. I actually got going so fast down this nearly three mile mountain that pedaling was useless. The only problem was what went down, had to go back up. I was able to swim daily, run and ride, clearly the best months in the navy. I was hoping to compete in the Iron man later that year. The ship completed its overall in September of '79 and we sailed to San Diego. My car was shipped by freighter and would arrive prior to the Fox. We came into port on a Friday and we were looking forward to the beaches. With my station wagon, I could haul a lot of people. The only problem was I had to pick up my car by 5:00 PM Friday at down town San Diego or I would have to wait till Monday to pick it up. The guys familiar with San Diego drew me a map and bets were being placed whether I could make the 13 miles before 5:00 PM on my bike. I would wax my bike on the fantail of the ship. It was my pride and joy - over 20,000 miles. We pulled into port and were berthed outboard of another cruiser. We had to pull shore power, water and phone lines down a quarter mile pier, over one ship onto ours. Copper cables were heavy and the segments bolted together. Engine room had to be secured prior to anyone leaving. All these things had to be completed prior to anyone from M-Division leaving. The clock was ticking down and at about 4:35 PM they let me off. I did not kno...Expand for more
w bikes were not allowed to go out the front gate (they were to be walked across the highway). By the time I hit the main gate I was at over 30 mph. The marine guard yelled at me to come back, but what was he going to do, leave his post and chase me? I do not know if the guys on the ship called down to Broadway pier and got them to close the gate early, but I really thought I arrived at 4:58 PM. The gate was just being pulled closed as I turned the last corner. I would have to wait till Monday. I was exhausted. On Saturday I rode the 85 miles to the beach and had a great time. It would be my last time to a beach for a very long time. On September 25, 1979 I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and spent months in Balboa Naval Hospital. I never participated in the Iron Man and my days of swimming, running and riding competitively ceased. I was discharged and attended Purdue University where I earned my degree in Mechanical Engineering. I went to work developing the next generation of Naval Nuclear Reactors. For the past 22 years I have worked for a number of companies dealing with neutron detectors, steam generators, highly radioactive waste storage, filters, refrigerated air dryers, gas pumps, shuttle buses and more. I am married and have five children. We now live in Fort Wayne. I got so fed up with Mark Souder (U.S. Representative) and politicians not addressing Social Security that I challenged him in 2002. I received 3% of the vote. In 2004 I challenged him again and received 21% of the vote. This past May 2006, I challenged him again and received 29% of the vote. I will challenge him again in 2008. Since "classmates" will not allow links, you can google "Bill Larsen" "social security" and find my web page. I hope all are well and doing fine. I hope to see you at our next class reunion. Best wishes, Bill
