William Layton:

CLASS OF 1960
Oak harbor, WA

William's Story

Hard to believe that it has been 50 years since graduation from Oak Harbor. The years have covered a trail with different high points in it. Joined the USMC while still in Senior Year on a deferred entry program. Served from l960-l965 with discharge as a Sgt. E/5. Then to Police Officer in Mcminnville, OR, to Guard at the Oregon State Penitentiary, to Police Officer in Canby, OR to employment with the US Postal Service in l969. Met the girl of my dreams in l964, married in l965 and still married to the same one for just shy of 45 years. Have a grown Son who is a Service Manager for an Air Conditioning Company and has been with the Company for over 18 years, and a daughter who is a Store Director for Fred Meyer in Shelton, WA. 6 grandkids, three great grandkids. Retired from USPS in 1992 with a full 30 year government career, (USMC and Post Office)at the ripe old age of 49 years old. Actually retirement was 6 days before my 50th birthday because that was how the government did the retirements on that round. Postal Service atarted in Newberg, OR, then to McMinville, OR as fill in Postmaster, then to Yamhill, OR as PM, Prineville, OR as PM and then a promotion back home to Mississippi, within 20 miles of where I grew up, to a Mail Processing Facility. Had a lrage facility that ran 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with 57 full time and 23 part time employees. Moved back to Oregon to be close to the then new grandson and have worked at a number of different occupations since then. Spent over 40 years working with the Boy Scouts and now devote a lot of volunteer time to Hunter Education Instruction. Have been doing that for the past 17 years. Oh, to those interested in the adoption thing that came up in Passmore's Family Relation Class. Finally got my family back together in 1973. er to Diabetes in about 1991. Dad is still living in Atlanta, GA area. So the trip back to Mississippi put me in the middle of a very large family that I didn't know existed. While working as a Police Officer at Canby, OR received word that my younger brother, Jon, who was in grade school when we lived in Oak Harbor, had been killed in Vietnam. He was in the Green Berets and there because he wanted to be. My Sister, Helen Louise,3 years my junior, lives in Washington, and her family is all grown. Looking forward to the 50th. Have not been back to the Island for nearly 30 years so I am certain that things have changed as well as the "kids" that I went to school with. I am certain I will find it fascinating to see the changes. When I first moved to the Island in mid-57 with my Fathers Naval transfer, we were living in a Quonset Hut on top of the hill near NAS Whidby. Actually just a mater of blocks from the old High School. I am guessing that the Quonset Huts are no more and the Bowling alley where I set pins for extra money is probably gone also. Also farly certainthat subdivision we moved into, out Swantown Rd. on Monticello Way is probably not recognizable now, and the old Boy Scouyt Camp that was just over the hill behind Don Pease's house is probably full of houses. Used to hunt rabbits in that area, and the forest was close enough to the subdivision that we could actually hune deer within about three blocks of the house. No more I am sure. Guess that is a pretty good outline. Does anyone else remember an incident in Biology when my partner and I , who had been raising white rats in a vitamin deficiency experiment, took them all out of the display cage and let them loose on the floor, about a week before graduation? The girls in class had a wild fit and I thought the both of us were going to miss out on graduation, but we survived it.
