William's Story
Life
Born in West Palm Beach, Florida, I attended Riviera Beach High School graduating in 1969. I got a B.A. degree in Music at USF in Tampa, Florida and earned my M.M. Degree in Voice at the U. of Illinois and went on to teach at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for 3 years. I sang throughout the United States at regional opera houses before traveling to Europe to sing a wide variety of operatic and musical comedy roles at many opera houses in Germany.
When I came back from Europe, I toured the country while volunteering at my church as a coordinator of Protestant Community Centers, Inc.'s (PCCI) SCEEP (Suburban Cultural Educational Enrichment Program). (Check the website cacofnj.org for more). In 1993, I joined the staff of PCCI as Associate Director in charge of education. During my tenure, SCEEP grew to over 30 centers located throughout Northern New Jersey and was named along with Community Partners for Youth a national education model at the 1997 Presidential Summit in Philadelphia. I have served on the South Orange/Maplewood School Board and am on numerous community and church committees I'm an active Methodist and chaired the Holy Boldness Committee of the Northern New Jersey Conference of the United Methodist Church which builds communities from the ground up through a faith-centered strategy empowering residents of "Shalom Communities" to build on their assets through collaborations and self help. I was recently selected for "Who's Who in the Northeast," and "Who's Who in the World," as an innovative educator and community organizer. I think of myself as a dedicated advocate for children and families.
I was recently honored By South Orange and Maplewood with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "Beloved Community" award for his work bridging communities between Newark and South Orange Maplewood.
I'm a trustee in his church as well as Vice President of the board of the South Orange Maplewood Coalition on Race and the Jersey Explorer Children's Museum in East Orange.
