One of William's favorite quotes is:"Everything changes. There is nothing permanent except change. - Heraclitus As I repeat, ad nauseum, to my favorite Capricorn nephew: the first rule of Capricorns is that there is no free lunch. And, an admonishment, courtesy of the marvelous actor Charles Laughton to perennial bad-boy Robert Mitchum: "My boy, there are skeletons in all of our closets. Most of us try to carefully conceal those skeletons or at least to keep the door closed. My boy, you not only fling open the door, you insist on dragging forth all of your skeletons and swing them happily over your head in the air like a war hoop. Now Bob, you simply must stop brandishing your skeletons ...". An exasparated Michael Caine to Christian Bale in "Batman Begins": "What good are doing all those bloody push-ups if you don't use them for something? Something I remember the great Jim Brown saying to Franco Harris when accusing him of always taking the easy way out by running out-of-bounds to keep from getting clobbered by ravenous tacklers: "... the point is you could do better. We can all do better." From Michael Jordan, the greatest sports figure of the past 50 years: "I was cut from my basketball team in high school. I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career, I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." Rewatching the original Hollywood version of "A Midsummer's N...Expand for more
ight's Dream": I think I'd rather hang out with Shakespeare's second tier clowns and knock-a-bouts (meaning the likes of James Cagney, Joe E. Brown, Hugh Herbert, etc.) than his pompous, ambitious kings, brooding lords of the underworld, obnoxious sprites and silly, dithering lovebirds. Re: Katherine Anne Porter's "Ship Of Fools": Also, place me at the table with the dwarf and the snubbed Jewish businessman. As he wisely noted, a much nicer, and more interesting accommodation. An interesting and perceptive belief from Tim Allen: Always try using a screwdriver first, before a hammer. The path is easier, usually firmer and more secure. And less damaging. As the major story of the last century was cultural change, I honestly believe that climate change will be the story of this one. And it won't be pretty. This is one my nephew will enjoy: from an old bit of Lenny Bruce's; his version of the old "Lost Horizon" film with Ronald Colman - Ronald Colman: Well, well! So at last, after all my weary journeys, I've finally found you, o Great High Llama! Now, I will learn the secret of everlasting life!! So tell me, o Great One: how do I achieve it? Great High Llama: Well, my son, you must follow three rules. You must not smoke, you must not drink and you must not (this is the big one, Bobby) fool around with evil women. Ronald Colman: Well, well!! So, if I don't smoke, drink or fool around with evil women I'll live forever? Great High Llama: No, my son. But it will seem like it. Lincoln's gentle response - after being chastised by one of his cabinet members for telling funny (and shrewd) stories - that if he didn't have humour to fall back on his heart would break. ...finally...when in doubt and despair; when desolation is everywhere and no light is able to be reached...and final darkness is threatening to envelop everything... take a deep breath, look around you and remember the great words of that noted American philosopher, Jerome Horwitz (better known to those of us among the unwashed Lower Depths as Curly Howard of the Three Stooges): "wub wub wub wub wub wub wub ... grrrr ... ruff! ruff!". (...this is usually right after Curly gets bonked with a hammer...) Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk!".
