More about William:"A proud veteran of two separate Armed Services. Three years, seven months and 25 days in the US Air Force and Stationed at Elmendorf AFB with the 1825th Electronic Installation Squadron from Oct 1971 to June 1974. Stayed out 89 days before joining the US Army in Sept 1974 and spending 17 years one month, two weeks and one day on active duty serving two tours in Germany, three at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, one at Fort Dix, NJ, and one tour at Fort Carson, CO.
My tours in Germany included five years at Montieth Barraks assigned to Bravo Company, 123rd Combat Support (Maintenance) Battalion, Division Support Command, 1st Armored Division. I attended the Small Arms air Defence Class at Todendorf, FRG up on the North Sea and not only fired a .50 Caliber M-2 Browning Heavy Machine Gun, but also watched the Vulcan 20mm Gatling shoot at low flying targets.
I also took a lot of trips to Tenneloe, Grafenwohr and Hohensfels supporting 1st AD...Expand for more
at their range complexes.
My second tour was a three year stint at 5th Maintenance Company, 66th Maint. Bn., 29th Area Support Group, 21st Suport Command in Kaiserslautern, FRG. I had an interesting tour there. Spent most of my time trying to keep my crew gainfully employed as we did not have an Armament mission to speak of. Semi-annual recoil exercises on M-60's and M110's warehoused in a CEGE site for issue to REFORGER troops did not present itself for an opportunity to excell. So I would contact Divisional Support Battalions to farm out my Turret and Artillery Mechanics to them when they were scheduled for duty at Graf or Hohenfels. This kept their skills up and earned me points for my Officer Evaluation Report Support Form.
In between I picked up Cheif Warrant Officer 2 and landed an assignment at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. First as a TAC Officer in the Warrant Officer Candidate Company, 16th Ordnance Bn., 61st Ordnance Brigade. I was then transfered to the US Army Ordnance Center and School to HHC 61st Ord Bn as the Senior Instructor for the Artilliery Repair Course untill I retired in October 1991 as a CW3.
I then went through several different carreer changes from Security Guard, Quality Technician, Range Officer, and then Contractor, first to support the Saudi Arabian National Guard Modernization Program maintaining their Light Armored Vehicle, Self Propelled Mortar system, then back to APG,MD as a New Equipment Trainer for the Marines new M777, 155mm Howitzer, then as a Small Arms Repair Instructor at the USAOC&S. Following the Army's move to Ft Lee, VA, I was out of work for a year before getting a job processing M198 155mm Towed Howitzers for issue to the Iraqi army. Life is fun if you let go and let GOD guide you.".
