William's Story

Life After graduation I worked for Tandy Software Assembly in Ft. Worth for 13 months. My sister Cathy and I shared an apartment in Richland Hills for a few months. In August 1982 I decided I needed a change in life. I joined the Navy. I went to bootcamp in Illinois Oct 82 to Jan 83. I reported to my 1st ship, a guided-missile destroyer; USS SEMMES at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, but the ship's homeport was Charleston, SC. There I worked in Deck Dept. While onboard I was fortunate to go to the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. I stayed onboard SEMMES until March 1984. After SEMMES came Destroyer Tender USS CAPE COD out of San Diego, CA. The ship provided repairs and support to other ships. I stayed on there for the next 2 1/2 yrs. There I still worked in Deck Dept for an additional 9 months and was finally able to train in another field; Operations Specialist (OS). That is operating the ship's radar, navigation, and communications systems. I got to travel to Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Philippines, Hawaii (twice), and Canada during my tour onboard. In Sept 1986 I decided to re-enlist for 6 yrs. My re-enlistment took place in Pearl Harbor onboard USS ARIZONA Memorial. I left the ship to attend OS apprenticeship school in Virginia Beach, VA. The course was 17 weeks long and I then received orders back to San Diego to USS KINKAID, a destroyer of the SPRUANCE class of ships. I reported onboard KINKAID in Feb 1987 and remained onboard until Feb 1989. I met and married my 1st wife while attached to KINKAID. I didn't get to sea much while on KINKAID. The ship received a major overhaul for 17 of my 24 months onboard. I was married August of 1987. I came due for shore-duty orders in Feb of 1989. I chose to go back to Virginia Beach to teach OS school. My wife and I packed our bags and moved to Virginia. I reported to OS school in March of 1989 and stayed until June 1992. During my tour my wife gave birth to 2 of our 3 children. Chris in July 1990 and Kayla in Nov 1991. After 3 yrs there I re-enlisted again for another 6 yrs and due to return to sea-duty. I received orders to Commander US Naval Forces Central Command in Manama, Bahrain (Middle East) for a one yr tour. I flew over in June 1992 to report for duty. While there I was able to see much of the Middle East; Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan. Was also part of 3 Tomahawk missile strikes against Iraq for violation of UN sanctions. I was able to come home after 5 months to see my family for 3 weeks. After my tour was up there, I selected orders to a ship in Norfolk, VA. I reported aboard USS WHIDLEY ISLAND; a US MARINE troop transport ship, in July 1993. Immediately the ship departed for a 5 month deployment to S. America and W. Africa. 5 weeks after the ship departed Virginia, my son Tyler was born. I got to see Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Columbia, Panama, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Sao Tome, Guana. Benin, and Senegal. I stayed on this ship for 2 yrs and 10 months. In 1994 after an overhaul, the ship went to Cuba for intensive training. While there the ship participated in retrieving Cuban refugees found floating in the Florida Straits. The ship transported more than 8,00...Expand for more
0 Cuban nationals back to Guantanamo Bay. Also took part in the planned invasion of Haiti, but invasion was called off. In 1995 the ship went to Norway via the English Channel to play Wargames with the Marines. That same yr also found me deploying to the Mediterranean Sea for a 6 month deployment. Went to Spain, Italy, Sicily, Crete, and Israel. I spent 9 days touring Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Was there when the Prime Minister was assassinated. I spent New Years in Venice, It that yr. Upon the ship's return I was again up for shore-duty orders. In 1996 I left the ship to once again teach OS school. I reported back to the school in Apr 1996 until March 1999. In August 1996 I found my birth mother in Galveston, TX. I had been searching for her since 1994. Through the use of the internet I was able to find my mom's father in Greenville, TX. He put me in touch with my mom. I have 3 younger half-brothers and 1 older step-brother and 1 older step-sister. I was able to drive to Texas to meet her face to face in Oct 96. It was a wonderful reunion. My sister was living in Louisiana at the time in a bad situation and was able to get her out of there and she lived with our mom for 10 yrs. In 1997 my wife and I decided to divorce. She moved with the kids to Denver, CO area in Apr 1998. I met my 2nd wife in Feb 1998 and married in Feb 1999. I stayed with her until Mar 2001. In 1999 I returned to sea-duty to a command called Fleet Information Warfare Center in Norfolk. The command sends personnel to various ships to provide technical support in certain warfare areas. I was there for 18 months. At which time my particular job skill was no longer required. I then received orders to my final command; USS WASP. I reported to WASP in Dec 2000; a US Marine aircraft carrier. I deployed to the Mediterranean/Middle East in Feb 2002 in the wake of 9/11 attacks. I transitted the Med Sea with a brief stop in Crete. The ship went through the Suez Canal, into the Red Sea and sat off the coast of Djibouti, Africa for 4 1/2 months looking for Osama Bin Laden. The ship had a brief rest in Bahrain before being relieved to return to homeport. The ship stopped in Turkey for 4 days and Rota, Spain for 6 days. Upon the ship's return, it went into a shipyard for a brief overhaul. I put in retirement to start Nov 2003. Upon my retirement I moved to Denver to be near my children. I got a job with an armored car company and stayed with it for 3 yrs. I handled millions of dollars every day. In Feb 2007 I began my current job; Armed Security Officer for AM-GARD, INC. I provide physical security to Fed/Gov facilities in the Denver area. The company is contracted through the Dept of Homeland Defense. Chris and Tyler live with me. Kayla lives with her mom 2 hrs West of Denver but we see each other every few weeks. The kids' mom and I have remained good friends. Her parents and siblings are all here and I am still considered part of the family to an extent. In March of 2010 I moved back to Texas. I worked for an armored car company for a few months and now work for a security company since 2011. I live in Watauga once again. Bought a house in 2015. Lost my 82 year old father in 2019. I am hoping to retire in 2027.
