Bill's Story

To Walnut Ridge Alumni: My profile shows Brown High School because I left Columbus in June, 1960, just after 8th grade at Johnson Park, to live on Nouasseur Air Force Base in Casablanca, Morocco. I spent 9th, 10th, and half of 11th there until returning to Walnut Ridge in January, 1962. Overseas we had an awesome group of kids that I didn't want to leave, but being military brats, we came and went all the time. Fortunately, I still see some of them and stay in contact. I went to Shady Lane Elementary with a lot of you, then spent 7th grade at Johnson Park in classrooms that were in various elementary classrooms around the East End. Eighth grade was our first year there together in the new building. That class split between Eastmoor and Walnut Ridge while I was in Morocco. The Far East side at that time was saturated with military families that are now spread out across the US. Even our class president was an Air Force brat that moved away. Ironically, Nancy Hoon from Johnson Park ended up with me in Morocco. Small world. Following an unsuccessful, but fun two quarters at Ohio State, I joined the Navy just in time to avoid being drafted after leaving school. I had so much fun on active duty that I remained in the reserves and retired in 1986. Good move on my part. I now get a check and have free medical and military benefits for going on two week vacations all those years. Following the Navy, I got out and went to college and worked full time until 1974 when I spent my senior year on campus at O...Expand for more
hio University. I took a temporary job with the Ohio Department of Taxation in 1980 just until I finished grad school. I then got my MBA in 1981 and forgot to leave. I started teaching as an adjunct at Columbus State and taught 2 or 3 courses every quarter for 24 years (accounting, computer science, and business courses). I started a wedding photography business in 1981 and a DJ business in 1987. Photography was a Saturday business that I kept for over 20 years. The DJ business, I turned over to my son who made a lot of beer money in college. My wife was a stay-at-home mom, so I put all those incomes together to pay tuition to put our 3 kids through St. Catherine grade school in Bexley, St. Charles Prep for Matt, and Columbus School for Girls for his sisters. The older two went to Ohio Wesleyan, and the youngest to Ohio University. I now have a school counselor, a physician assistant, and a CPA in the family; plus the same wife. The older two are married and have kids due in May and August this year. The babies are already costing me money and they're not even born yet! Does this get worse? I retired January 1st, 2006 because of a 3 year buy-out by Columbus State and purchase of Navy time. I've been a substitute teacher ever since. It's flexible, I work whenever I want, and I get summers off. Plus, I don't have lesson plans or papers to grade. My hobbies are going to Vegas, taking cruises, boating on Lake Erie, and a summer golf league. Oh, and shopping on the internet. Can't leave that one out.
